I am unable to do anything with my photos or art because windows 10 destroyed my OS (windows 8.1). It has been in the shop to recover data and repair the hard drive. The loss in productivity is frustrating. Mac users hold your tongue, please.

I knew there was a reason I didn't "upgrade", it will be interesting to see if anyone else posts any problems.

You can revert back to 8.1 here:

Jessica, the computer is unusable. The windows 10 installation destroyed win 8.1 and rendered the computer unusable. The data may have been damaged and/or lost. Reverting to 8.1 wasn't an option because the OS was destroyed.

Ugh, sorry to hear that John. I do hope that they are able to recover your data and repair your hard drive. Did they give you a time frame of when to expect a report?

Sorry to hear, that's rough news. I have 10 on reserve, but after all the bad press, think I'll wait until the bugs are worked out, thanks for the heads up and hope you get your data back.

Does Windows auto update to 10 or do you have to go install it? Every time windows auto updates it screws everything up and I have to go roll it back and then do it again.

You can either click yes to update or download do a install from scratch.
I've had no problems with the update. I have an HP desktop that is about 1.5 years old and a fast Internet connection.

i'm wondering if its not the software, but a hard drive that was just on the edge of failing. and the massive amount of data simply did it in. because you should be able to back step some how, even if you did in dos.

a major upgrade is already planned for October (likely called ‘Windows 10.1’) and the initial release is far from bug free.

@Adam, it doesn't auto install, but as I found out yesterday, it auto downloads. Watch out if your using mobile broadband. The download chewed through nearly 5GB of my data before I realized what was happening!

OH, John. How awful. I am really confused on this topic. I use a Dell latop running Windows 8.1. I haven't noticed anything different. So it has already auto-downloaded? How do I see this?

Most professional cameras have a tool that allows you to transfer your images from camera to phone via nfc..through that you should be able to edit and "carry on"til the pc is up and running?!

Should get the computer back Monday. Will immediately mirror the hard drive and back up all data. I have a 20 TB system in a 5 disk array so will have no trouble doing that. The hard drive is less than 4 years old so that should not be the problem, but just in case, I am mirroring the drive and will be ready to replace it if necessary.
I hope no one else experiences anything like this.

Egads! I have a 4-disk array in a server that I use as a PC, and I often wonder if it's worth giving up all that space. Right now I'm thinkin' yes... yes it is. Bet you're reeeeeal happy about that John! Still gives me the heebie-jeebies though, I'm feelin' for ya.
Think I'll also stick with 7 for the time being. I don't deal well with downtime, even just what it takes to upgrade a system. ISN'T IT DONE YET????? I'M. OFF. LINE!!!!

I did the upgrade. The only Problem I had was my Rosetta Stone was stopped. With a very long phone call and a Norton upgrade I'm back in business...except I haven't checked my Photoshop. I wonder if that is in good working order...off to check.

Everything is working great on my computer if not way better. No problems with my upgrade to 10.
I happened to speak to a guy that works for a local geek squad a few months ago who was one who test ran Windows 10 and knew it very well. He said that 10 was like 7 and 8 had a baby named 10 and it is way,way better. Skip Windows 8 (I had 7) and go straight to 10. His words not mine.

You've all got me worried now. I'm still running Vista and the only thing I've installed recently was Chrome. Twice in the last few days my computer has crashed with a message saying Windows had to close to protect data, and then restarted itself and continued to work normally. I've had this computer since 2007 and it's never happened before. I get notified about Windows updates, but haven't installed any recently. Could the crashes be due to downloading Windows 10 behind the scenes without my knowledge? How do I find out?

There is a reason to wait about two years - until MS comes out with windows 11 to upgrade to 10. This happens every time - I won't upgrade - IF I were to want it - I'd have a "professional" computer guy do it - and be responsible.

One recent case practically gets Windows 10 stuck in an seemingly endless loop of trying to upgrade, failing, rebooting, and trying again, only to fail. Rinse and repeat, and you've got one very irate customer.
The wayward update in this case is a certain KB3081424 that was pushed out August 5. This update was reported to fail the first time it tries to install. As per protocol, Windows 10 will try to roll back the update but in doing so will require the user to reboot. However, once the system has restarted, Windows 10's automatic update process kicks in again, which tries to install KB3081424 again, and again fails. Apparently, the update writes a bad entry in the Windows 10's registry which prevents all further attempts from succeeding.
For now, the only way to break this cycle is to dig down into the arcane Windows registry and undo what the update has done. After that, update KB3081424 should install correctly. Apparently, Microsoft's own tool for temporarily holding back certain updates doesn't list KB3081424, which would have help alleviate the situation.

Always wonder why people feel the need to upgrade so much, very happy runningwWindows 7, see no need to update or upgrade, if it works don't fix it.

I run Vista, but keep getting small pop-up reminders from Norton to backup stuff prior to going to 10. Sticking with what I have. It still works fine.

It is not uncommon for a hard drive to fail after 4 years, so it very well could have been it was on it's way out anyways. The high specs of Windows 10 may have just been the tipping point of the failure. I have had hard drives fail in 2 years.

For anyone thinking about upgrading to W10, a couple of suggestions,
1) create a disk image of your existing setup (usually drive C) - free software such as Macrium reflect would be ok http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx - remembering to create a rescue disk
2) use the download option to get W10 and create a bootable DVD or USB stick and install from that.
If the worst happens you can always return to your current setup - barring hardware failure
