Is it legal to paint disney characters. I have seen some do it but the Internet says otherwise

"The Internet" is the same as a hammer. Its a thing. Not a God. Ask Disney for permission and see what they say.

This is a case where asking a lawyer is the best advice. But I have heard before that Disney will sue a daycare for trademark infringement for painting their characters on the side of the daycare. I would not try to sell Disney images. Some corporations have people that look just for copyright and trademark infringement online.

Its more where they are painted or how the paintings are used that can get you in trouble. Well thats not a legal opinion, but it is mine.

define legal.

you would have to get their written permission if you want it to be legal, so they don't send the hounds. lots of people do lots of things, doesn't make them right. i would contact a copyright lawyer about it, because we aren't lawyers, and the net people aren't either (they might but you know). best to stay away from disney is my advice. they have lawyers you couldn't afford. better to make your own cartoons. they may license it out to you, but i'm willing to bet the price is outside of normal things.

No, it is not legal to create Disney character images and sell them without express permission from the Disney company.

Nor is it legal to sell any other item bearing characters belonging to other entertainment entities.

Not that you'd know it from viewing the Sold page on FAA. I saw a picture of Wonder Woman on that page the other day. FAA's rule seems to be "just don't get caught". :P

I would say if you painted them for your own personal use then fine, to sell licensed characters of Disney is a no no, Even when I worked at Hancock fabrics that sold disney fabric, it was known that anything made with the fabric was for personal use or gifting not for resale of any kind from any craft or garment made from said licensed print. In my opinion I would play it safe.

Apama, here's where you may find your answers:

Who do I contact to request permission to use Disney intellectual property for non-commercial uses such as hand-made artwork, clothing, themed private parties, student projects, stage shows, etc.?
