Back To The Top Button

I have come to the conclusion that we really need a back to the top button for all Discussion topics, general and group. I am sure that I am not alone when I say "it is a pain to scole back to the top of the larger discussion topics. And so is there anyone else that agrees?

What annoys me more is when you click on the "BIG SKIP" button, and your thrown back to the beginning....And you have to scroll back down to where you were.

I see no reason why we can't be left at the next posting after hitting that button

I agree. Most of the time I find it faster to close the page and reopen it to get back to the top.

I've always wondered why the discussions aren't sorted into pages like most other forums. It makes it extremely difficult to find anything in a long discussion when you have to click "BIG SKIP" and then wait for several hundred or thousand messages to load and then sort through them.

It definitely may help ;-P

Yes! I'd love to see a return to home/back to top, or even a fixed "˄" in the corner.

Roger, I think that trying to keep position would take some coding (maybe a routine that says to put in a in-page link after so many posts), but it would definitely be a nice addition if it could be done.

As Martin pointed out, on a Windows computer you can hit the Home keyboard button. On a Mac it's Command + up arrow. Both take you right back to the top of the page.

I'm with those who'd like to be redirected to where they left off in a thread, but I suspect that would require some rather fancy coding. On other boards I belong to the subject text of the threads I've visited is a different color from the ones I haven't. That at least lets me know that I've already seen them, but it doesn't tell me where I stopped reading. This board is pretty complex to begin with, not to mention massive. I have no idea if our wish is even capable of being granted.

Yes, with the Windows platform, the "Home" button takes you to the top of the page. Conversely, the "End" button takes you to the bottom of the page. I also use the "Back" button quite often, instead of trying to position the mouse cursor over the back arrow on the screen page and click to go to the previous page. This really comes in handy when surfing through contest pages and then wanting to go back to where you started quickly, (usually at the contest page list for me).

For those long threads where you want to scroll up or down but maybe not all the way to the top or bottom, I click and hold down the mouse button on the scroll bar and drag it up or down which moves the page much more quickly than using the scroll wheel on the mouse. For slower scrolling however, to see the data while moving up or down I will use the scroll wheel on the mouse.

Knowing and using some of the alternate methods of maneuvering will ease some of the frustration of time consumption when surfing through a browser.

I always use my keyboard short cut "Ctrl"+"Home" buttons and it takes me right to the top page. I wonder if anyone tried that function. This is on PC.

Opn + left click at top of slide track on right side of window gets you back to the top of discussion. This works no matter how many pages down you are in the discussion - just go to the top of the track that is visible in current window. This works in OSx so I would expect it would work in windows using Alt instead of Opn.

On Windows, hitting HOME takes you back to the top, as mentioned.

To find out where you left off last, if you previously posted, hit Control F and do a search for your name. If you posted several times, you click Next to move through your posts.

I, too, agree that the Big Skip taking you back to the top is a pain.

At the bottom of the page, the last person posts and when I hit 'home' on my computer it brings me to the top. I believe all computers work that way. I'm missing something. Why aren't you all able to get back to the top like that?

I just noticed several people have posted the same thing... no one has said Ohhhhhhh I never tried that LOL.
Now the only problem is the big skip?

I agree that when we click on the big skip, we should be able to start at that point. I hope the coders fix this issue because it is an issue.

Erica appears to be perfectly correct - it works fine for me! Home = top of page and End = very bottom. :o)

Where you donīt need it (Big Skip) it goes back to the top. Where you want it (shopping cart widget), it doesnīt. Funny ...

You can easily go back to the top of the web page by holding down the CTRL key and tapping the HOME key.
This should bring you back to the top. Similarly, if you wanted to go to the end of the webpage you can
hold down the CTRL key and tap the END key.

I hope this helps.

Oh, sorry about that. I did not read the whole thread. Guess what I did.
After reading a few posts I used the END key to make my post. lol
Blessings.

Oh by the way, since I am here, I just wanted to let you know that a couple of years ago I created a group where you can post your ideas for new FAA features and modifications. I have posted a number of my ideas there and then occasionally I email an FAA representative sharing my idea and sending them a link. Please feel free to post your ideas there if you wish.

Only post images only images in the format I have started. Don't add long wordy explanations. I think a picture IS worth a thousand words. :-)

All you have to do is capture the page you have an idea for, open the image into a graphics editor, add the changes you would like to see and then save and post it to the group.
Also the group is password protected. This is so that only FAA artists and staff can go to this group. If you are interested in sharing your ideas there please send me an FAA message and I will gladly reply with the password for you.

Bruce

ps. Here are the specific instructions on how to create your idea in graphic form.

1. Go to the web page you want see your idea or modification on.
2. Capture the screen by holding down the CTRL key and tapping the PRINT SCREEN key.
This will capture your screen and put the image in the clipboard.
3. Open up a graphics editor and paste the image from the clipboard into the graphics program
4. Add your ideas/modifications to the image using arrows, boxes and text.
Use as little text as possible.
5. Save your imaged with its changes and post the image into the group.

I hope this will help all of us.

Erica, I don't have a button at the bottom of any of the discussions that takes me back to the top of the discussion, The only things at the bottom of the discussion page is
Post reply, and 2 sulection boxes for Follow discussion and/or notify by e-mail. I scole to the top by use of the slide bar on the right side. it's not bad for short discussions but some of these discussions get into the 1000's and then it gets really annoying after a couple of them..
So I wanted to know how many other people this bothered as to see if it was worth posting to Frank.
And bruce I will try your method and see how it works, these discussions can be very informative in learning more about computers.
Thanks every one for input.

Thank you very much Bruce, it worked great, so now I don't have to bother them with a tiny little requst, I got an answer and a remady to the problem(well more of an anoyance)
LOL. Now Bruce can you tell me why my spell check just suddenly stopped working on FAA?

Ericamaxine Price

Valenteana... not in the discussion.. on your keyboard you have a 'home' button and 'end' button, along with page up page down.... etc.

If you use Firefox, there's a top and bottom arrow button plugin you can install. Couldn't live without it. Well OK... I could, but I wouldn't want to.
