Pixels.com, Fineartamerica.com, New Products, And Website Differentiation

We're getting ready to roll out a lot of new products during the next few months.

Some of the products will be available on all of our domains (e.g. Pixels.com, FineArtAmerica.com, Instaprints.com, etc.), and some of them will only be available on Pixels.com.

Now is the perfect time to discuss why.

We launched this business back in 2006 with a single domain name: FineArtAmerica.com

At the time, we only sold canvas prints, framed prints, and regular prints (rolled in a tube). Within a year or so, we had added metal prints, acrylic prints, and greeting cards. All of those products (with the exception of greeting cards) were "fine art" products.

The domain name said "fine art". The products said "fine art". It was a perfect fit.

I knew, however, that we would eventually expand into other product categories. That's why we purchased Pixels.com back in 2013.

For the past two years, Pixels.com and FineArtAmerica.com have been virtually identical. They look similar. They sell similar products, etc.

Now, as we start to add new products, we're going to finally differentiate the websites.

Pixels.com is going to be the parent site that sells all of our products, and FineArtAmerica.com will remain a fine art and home decor site.

FAA has a great reputation in the art world and great SEO positioning in Google for all sorts of art-related search terms. We're not going to jeopardize that reputation or jeopardize the sale of a $500 canvas print by positioning that print right next to a $15 t-shirt.

FAA is going to continue to sell all of our art products and any home decor products that make sense. For example, lots of buyers purchase framed prints for their walls and then add throw pillows to their orders, as well, to complement the prints. As a result, it makes sense to keep throw pillows on FAA. The same thing goes for duvet covers.

Once we start adding apparel (e.g. t-shirts) and other accessories (e.g. calendars, puzzles, etc.), those types of products could muddy the waters on FAA and devalue the "fine art" shopping experience.

Therefore, those type of products will only exist on Pixels.com.

There are some products that could go either way. For example, do tote bags belong on FAA and Pixels.com or just Pixels.com? That's a tough call. What we're going to do is what we always do... let buyer behavior guide the way. We'll test out tote bags on both FAA and Pixels.com, and if they create a nice additional revenue stream for our sellers on FAA without harming artwork sales, at all, then they'll probably stay. If they have any negative impact on artwork sales, then they'll get moved over to Pixels.com, exclusively.

Here's a breakdown of how the sites will be differentiated:

1. Pixels.com will sell everything.
2. FAA will sell art and home decor.
3. Your premium website will everything.
4. Your Facebook fan page will sell everything.
5. Your embedded shopping cart widgets will sell everything.

This gives our members maximum flexibility in how they choose to promote themselves.

If you're an art purist and only want to sell "fine art"... then FAA is for you. As we roll out new products, don't activate them. Just stick with canvas prints, framed prints, metal prints, and acrylic prints. You can even remove yourself entirely from Pixels.com, if you want to. Just click on your "Behind the Scenes" page and look for the icon that says "Domains". When you're promoting yourself throughout the internet (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.), you should send your potential buyers to FAA or your premium site. For you, nothing changes. Just keep using FAA like you've always used it. You're an artist. You don't sell "merchandise". You sell art on an art site.

If you like merchandise, apparel, and accessories (in addition to fine art)... and if you want to put your images onto all of the new products that we roll out, then Pixels.com is for you. As we roll out new products, activate them all. All of the new products will appear on Pixels.com, and your art and home decor products will continue to appear on FAA, as well. When you're promoting yourself throughout the internet (e.g. Facebook, Twitter, etc.), you should send your buyers to Pixels.com or your premium site so that they can see all of your products. If you're feeling particularly artsy one day and want to just promote the "fine art" part of your business... then send your potential buyers to FAA on that day.

By having separate domains, everyone gets the best of both worlds. For those sellers who want to get into new businesses like apparel, puzzles, phone cases, etc. and have enjoyed selling those types of products on Zazzle or Cafepress in the past... Pixels.com is a new (and better) place for you to sell them. We've got a better pricing structure... better sales tools... a better product configurator... etc.

For those sellers who just want to stick with fine art and home decor, you get to continue selling those products on FAA.

Let me know if you have any questions. I know that it's hard for our longtime members to wrap their heads around sending buyers to Pixels.com. They often ask, "Why can't you just add all of these new products to FAA?" We can't do that for the reasons listed above.

If you want to sell merchandise, apparel, and all of these new products that are coming down the road, you have to get used to promoting yourself on Pixels.com.

Think about how you do things right now. You probably have an account on FAA for your artwork and a separate account on Zazzle for all of your merchandise. You promote them differently depending on the type of buyer you're targeting and what you're trying to sell.

Now, instead of having an account on FAA and an account on Zazzle... you'll have an account on FAA and an account on Pixels.com... and you'll promote them differently depending on the buyer you're targeting and what you're trying to sell. The big difference is that it's much, much easier to manage both accounts because you can do it all from one place. Also, everything ties together perfectly on your premium websites, Facebook shopping carts, and embeddable widgets.

We've got a lot of exciting announcements coming very soon. The FAA / Pixels innovation engine has been cranking behind the scenes for almost five months now, and the results are going to be revealed in the coming weeks.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Beautiful! I considered accounts on other sites because i like some of the merchandise options, but I don't want to have to remember what I uploaded where, and try to manage multiple accounts. I'd rather be out taking new pix!

For that matter, you can also create galleries for highlighting specific products on your own site. If there are some images you prefer to keep "fine art," or some that work better than others for particular merchandise, create a gallery to guide people to them. That's what I did.

So glad to see this announcement! Just a thought: Tote bags are not home decor, so I'd prefer keeping them on the Pixels site along with the other merch. I do realize, though, that the decision will be made after seeing how they sell on FAA.

Thank you!!

Simply brilliant, Sean .... Pixels.com is the place I am proud to bring all my customers to .... thank you very much!

my question is this:

i'd like to sell all those thing on my fine art account. because buyers ignore the name of the store, and we already have a lot of stock on this site, the fine art them was lost a while ago... which i guess is fine. but everyone knows about this place. not pixels. and only a few know my actual store name. google goes here, not the other stores unless you force the issue. and if buyers have to force the search they will end up on other sites with those other products.

so i'd like to have the choice to simply sell it all here. if the only thing holding you back is the url... that doesn't bother me. i think there are many lost and confused customers that want the other products but can't find it.

if we could have check boxes what sites we want the products to be on that would be good... checks under FAA, pixels, my site and all the clones.

you can call pixels the main site, but all links come back here. and google knows only about the first place, which is FAA. as long as at the very least they stay on my artist site i can at least direct those that are lost and email me, i can send them over there instead.

also are these officially out yet? can we price them?

Very smart! Love it!

Should lead to a lot of repeat business.

BTW - I can't imagine why anyone would sell on Zazzle with its pain in the neck upload methodology. Its a nightmare.

Q for the panel. How would someone handle this situation? Say you create a series of work designed with a certain product in mind - say t-shirts. If you put in a gallery called "T-shirts" it currently would show up on both sites.

Or will we have the ability to display a gallery on only one site or the other or both?

Also - can we have a stat that tells us which site the sale originated from?

My one wish list item as more products are added, would it be possible to remove them from the shop menu on our AW if we don't offer them? Right now if I hover "shop" on my AW, Tote bags already appear in the product listing and I am not yet offering any and I may or may not change that. But as more products are added, I'm sure there are some of them I will not offer at all and an empty product choice looks odd.

PS As long as I'm making wishes it, it would be nice to remove mediums for which we have no work as well. ;-)

PPS And one more - is it a new development that un-framed prints are listed in the shop menu as "standard prints" - that doesn't make them sound very special. Wouldn't paper prints be better? or Art prints? Or? Well any word that doesn't sound like the basic brand at the grocery store. =D

Very well thought through, Sean. Thank you, and I'm happy to be a part of the fun. Now if I can just find the time to sit down and activate everything!! We're getting our house ready to sell ... then the move ... then the unpacking ... then ... then ...

deep sigh

So if it seems I'm not jumping on the bandwagon, dat be why ...

( I know ... calm down, Lois ... All in good time ... all in good time ... )

@Sean,

Is there a way to not have to show all of the products on our premium artist websites? I know there's a market for this stuff, but I bet I'm not alone in not wanting to even show "tote bags" as a "Shop" item on the premium site. It would be great if we could choose to not even display that in the Shop area if we're not participating in that product.

There are some products I'd personally be interested in, like the scarves other platforms are now offering. And maybe puzzles, but on the dedicated premium sites it seems like we could choose to not even show the products we're not interested in selling.

Cool. Thx Sean.

And, here's a vote for scarves... preferably silk or silk blend. They aren't as kitschy, can be worn or hung on the wall, or draped over a lamp etc. That's the only product from the other platforms that's caught my attention in the last few months.

Heather Applegate

I'm with Edward - if I upload PNG files for totes, t-shirts and such, I'd have them in their own gallery - but it wouldn't make any sense to have that gallery showing on FAA - it would just be confusing.

The only thing I'm really interested in is the new statistics - all this other new stuff takes a back seat to that in my mind. Can't market it properly or efficiently without some proper stats.

When I'm signed in on pixels and publishing new work in my portfolio through pixels . . + sharing/promoting my new work on my social media networks via status updates on > Google+ - twitter - fb - etc. . . . via pixels.com . the watermark should NOT show fineartamerica . . that is a total contradiction . . . .

I agree that they should be separated but also not a bad idea to have a pointer on both sites to the other products available from the same artists as a footnote link under the products for sale.

Hi Sean,

Looking forward to promoting the new Pixels.com products.

I have been extremely busy setting up sites and links: www.BigFatArts.info

I was in the process of uploading (and promoting) hundreds of artworks when a potential customer (via Facebook) told me of issues he'd been having (checkout not showing on Mobiles) I have held back until this issue has been resolved or at least a workaround. Is anyone aware of this issue?

The potential with Pixels.com is huge. Very exciting.... would be good to chat with someone if possible.. be great to push ahead with new campaign... just need to get this sorted.

Hello Sean!

My name is Jennie Duncan and I've recently upgraded my "FREE" membership to a "PREMIUM" one. You can just call me a confused newbie for now! Anyway, I had started my "free" membership back in 2013, but finally decided to go "premium" last week! Since I'm new to this, like many others I'm sure, I've got a couple of questions for you, if you don't mind. The reason I'm asking these questions, is because I want to order my new business cards and want to make sure the links to my accounts work properly. Here are my questions below:

1. Once I upgraded to "premium membership," this is the website name I received: - http://jennie-duncan.pixels.com - which I seem to be having a problem with trying to do a "search" for it in a search bar, for example, say on Yahoo or MSN. I enter that exact website name and nothing really happens. It just pulls up a lot of "other" Jennie Duncans. However, when I put that website in a message to someone on Facebook, my website shows up, but says "coming soon." Aren't the initials "www" supposed to be after the "http://" part ?? Would that also apply to my question about the artistwebsites.com below ??

2. What is the difference between these two website names -- artistwebsites.com and pixels.com ?? I already understand that Pixels.com will have all the products, which is fine. I haven't tried to put my name and the artistwebsites.com words together yet. If I put my name connected with the artistwebsites.com wording, will it still go straight to my profile page on Pixels.com ??

This is all very confusing to me, as I also understood that when I originally signed up for a free membership back in 2013, I recall reading something about a statement saying that when a person upgraded to "premium", there would be two websites a person would get -- all for the same price of $30 per year. I've been spending about an hour [so far] tonight, customizing my profile for the Pixels.com area. Another issue I'm having is that if I want to access my website on here, I have to go through my "bookmark" area on my computer, find the "bookmark" I want and then click onto the bookmarked item. Isn't there an easier way to get to my profile on here without all this other work I'm having to do?? I wish a "shortcut" icon could be put on my computer's desktop screen with all the other ones.

Thanks for your time and I'll be looking forward to your reply when you have a chance. Looking forward to seeing what other products will be making their debut soon!

Regards,
Jennie Duncan

Hi Sean,

thanks for the update. It would be great if you could do silk scarves as well. They are a classy art product.

How about putting a small link on the FAA artist pages maybe at the bottom of the print items saying 'additional products' which when clicked would shoot the customer over to pixels? Such a link could be optional, turned on (or off) by each individual artist according to their preference. It would allow more flexibility.

I am wanting to have the multiple products but I dont really like that the site name is just 'jelila-jelila.pixels' as it doesnt relate to art. And I am an artist. So I am going to change my website to jelilaart.pixels if possible.

thanks for the great service and products you provide!

Jelila :)

Searches on search engines take weeks sometimes to find sites but you do not search for them using links. Searches are for names and keywords, or even questions. Your ADDRESS BAR on the browser is for links

2. What is the difference between these two website names -- artistwebsites.com and pixels.com ?? I already understand that Pixels.com will have all the products, which is fine. We're finally getting rid of one of our domain names that has always been a pain to deal with: artistwebsites.com

Don't worry - your premium website is NOT going away. It's just getting a new name. We're replacing "artistwebsites.com" with "pixels.com". That's it.

Here's the old premium website:
http://jennie-duncan.artistwebsites.com

Here's your new one:
http://jennie-duncan.pixels.com

Here is your free shared area http://pixels.com/profiles/jennie-duncan.html

The pages from your old site will automatically redirect to the new site. You won't lose traffic. You won't lose visitors. You don't have to change your business cards. You don't have to change the links on your blog. You don't have to change anything.

Your premium site still works exactly the same as it use to - it just has a new domain name now.

Also - if you're using a custom domain name for your premium website (e.g. myartsite.com), that custom domain name will continue to work exactly as it did before.

You should use that new URL going forward, but again, there is no need to go back and update your existing links if you don't want to.

Why did we do this?

1. We never liked the name artistwebsites.com. It's long... it's a little bit of a tongue-twister... and people always get confused when they hear it. Is "artists" plural or singular? Is "websites" plural or singular?

2. The name started to not make sense as our business expanded over time. The websites aren't just for "artists". They're used by large corporations (e.g. National Geographic). They're used by t-shirt designers. They're used by all sorts of sellers who might not classify themselves as "artists".

3. Pixels.com is a much cleaner, shorter, universal domain name. It's easy to remember... it's spelled and pronounced the same way in almost every language on the planet... etc.

This is all very confusing to me, as I also understood that when I originally signed up for a free membership back in 2013, I recall reading something about a statement saying that when a person upgraded to "premium", there would be two websites a person would get -- all for the same price of $30 per year. The link is in your Behind the Scenes area (about the middle of the page). It is also in your premim features area. Most people bookmark it. or make it a homepage for when they start up the browser

I hope this helps

Hello Abbie,

Thanks for your detailed response. I think I had also asked one of the questions [in my email reply to you] again, that was covered above by your reply, so sorry about that! I'll try to do a search in the ADDRESS bar in my browser and see what happens. Thanks again and sorry to be such a pest with my questions. I just want to make sure I understand everything. No, I don't use a custom domain name, so I don't have to worry about that part!

Have a great weekend!!

Any chances of getting postcards. I have some people always asking. They just aren't into the "greeting cards" :/

Jessica Jenney

We are asked to bring people to our pixels or artist website but we can't control who comes through FAA and certain products are
not here. It's a loss for all of us.

Sean, you say only home decor products will sell on FAA. Is a tote bag home decor? And if a shower curtain is home decor then why not bath towels?
Why is home decor selling on FAA at all for that matter? I think if the public knew that FAA was strictly wall art and Pixels were for all products and he advertised it that way that it would make more sense. It's all very counterintuitive to me.

I sold a shower curtain yesterday and the buyer could have wanted matching bath towels, but since he came through FAA he wouldn't have known.
That's a loss for all.

It would at least be something to be able to the choice to have only wall art on FAA and everything else on Pixels.

Jessica Jenney

It would be nice to have the option to have only wall art sold on FAA and all other products on Pixels. But now if we want to sell all products we have no choice as to where they will appear. It would make sense since we all choose to sell different products anyway.

Jessica Jenney

Some new products are not sticking in the artist website. They are in Pixels site.

Beth Myer Photography

Agree with all who say the pixels and FAA branding differences are confusing. I notice on my pixels personal website (formerly known as artists website) the FAA watermark shows on all products, while some are actually FAA and some are Pixels (I appreciate the watermark, but differentiating which product comes from which division would be nice). Also, the website address has the word pixels in, while the bottom of the screen lists FAA as powering the website. This is especially confusing for anyone who doesn't know it's the same company which could make some people who don't know me leery of ordering from there. I know if I were shopping from a company and saw two different company names on the same wesite, I might think it odd, unless they hyphenated or something. I really like FAA/Pixels quality and product range so plan to stay here, but just feel with so many POD websites competing for business, it's confusing to have multiple company names competing within the same brand, instead of one solid identity.

Also wondering if the calendars and puzzles mentioned in the original post will show up soon. It would be amazing to be able to offer those for the upcoming holiday shopping season. I know many puzzle/calendar lovers and think those items could be successful for all of us.

Are the fine art images made at at separate facility, regardless of which site they were ordered from or do the separate sites manufacture everything that their site promotes? Is there a difference in quality (however slight) between those art prints manufactured at FAA vs pixels???
