Mr. Turner (the Movie)

I caught Mr. Turner last night. (The movie not Dan.) Fascinating movie about the last quarter of the famous British painter's life among a changing world. Would you strap yourself to a mast in order to experience a snow squall for your next painting? What a character!

Those inclined to enjoy debating painting vs. photography will enjoy the scene where Mr. Turner has his daguerreotype taken and a wishes that the photography never discovers the mystery of color.

My hero. I need to watch this. They taught the actor to paint over two years so he would be more realistic.

Edward,Ann,

I'v watched some pretty heavy hitters lately, The Judge, with Robert Downey Jr., Robert Duvall,Theory Of Everything,Foxcatcher,Whiplash,Imitation Game,Kill the Messenger, and Birdman to name a few. Last night was The Hobbit and then last weekend, Hunger Games, which seems to be losing a bit of steam!

Kill the messenger was a "under the Radar" kinda movie with Jeremy Renner, from the "Hurt Locker" and tells the true story of the reporter that found out the the U.S. government was supplying arms in return to smuggling cocaine into the U.S. and distributing it to mostly poor and black neighborhoods, for cash and then buying the guns. Not a happy ending!

Speaking of Netflix - I'm hooked on "Bloodline" at the moment. It's a slow burn but its keeps building up the tension.

I was going to say I would put my camera on the mast but then they didn't have small portable cameras did they?!! The British actor playing Mr. Turner is one of my favorite actors, he seems to appear in the quality shows.

I missed Mr Turner when it was out a few months back, one of Britains finest painters, wanted to see it, along with the intimidation game - We all know what national security should, and often is about, sacrifice and loyalty to country, but hey power leads to coruption everywhere, and evil can take hold - and the intimidation game shows how revolting, elements of national security, in its worst moments, can be. Turin was a hero who literally saved millions of lives and enabled us to win WW2 by decrypting the unbreakable German enigma code and developing the seeds of the modern computer; he was treated like scum and a traitor simply for being gay until he commited suicide. Our national shame on epic levels.. especially as later many of our top agents then fled to Russia with all our secrets. It makes you wonder what other great acts of revulsion are committed in the name of national security. What the hell goes on. That includes you, us and everyone else on this planet. Having said that many act relentlessly in all of our protection, the entire country and the wider world as a whole, and truest meaning of security, so we salute them! Unfortunately some have other agendas. Their own selfish and corrupt agendas. Only when we strive to reach the highest levels do we achieve them, in any discipline, be that art, science, politics, security, business or otherwise. oops i digressed.... so yeah No one ever talks about films as art, they amass the works of 100s in a year to achieve an artform lasting a few hours.. like bees building a hive, each contributing a small part, costumes, make up, sets, lighting, design, acting, scripting, directing.. does anyother art form involve so many others contributing? i guess modern theatre is quite huge too. Some West End musicals are just breathtaking, recently ive seen the Commitments, Billy Elliot, Miss Saigon, Likewise in Broadway 2 years back, we saw the Lion king. Just amazing productions!

Must explore what this netflix is. Must be pay on demand. Man am i out of touch? back to Mr Tuner... oops i digressed Edward, pardon the intrusion.

edit: Our truest level of national security can only come from maintaining peaceful coexistence between countries, not disrupting them

It is an excellent film, directed by the iconic British Director, Mike Leigh. Timothy Spall was fantastic and, as Abbie pointed out, spent two years learning how to paint (or rather copy) Turner's style so that he could actually paint the canvases. Well worth the time and also to understand the complexities of J.M.W Turner's character.
As a follow up, for those who may want to know more of his earlier life, I would recommend reading J.M.W Turner, Standing in the Sun by Anthony Bailey.

The historically it's concluded that Turner was in his 60's and would never have tied himself to the mast. It's just one of his artistic stories/legends.

In the Directors Guild interview it tells that they never wrote a script but developed the scenes as they went along.

The colors were fantastic, thanks to the cinematographer, who worked with the director, cast and crew on several shoots.

I loved the movie, but it's not for everyone.

Just finished it last night, took 2 nights since I started late on Friday. This is one of those movies,as a photographer, almost each scene, you want to stop, get the camera out, step into the scene, take a few shots and then let it continue. "Crouching Tiger" was another example of beautiful landscapes/scenes. Another, can't remember the title, but about 2 buddies, one from Texas and the other England? And they go to Iceland and travel around, having a "Bromance",nice stuff there too,

Rich

p.s. ALSO watched Interstellar last night, good movie, but kinda strange to watch after the finish of Mr. Turner,

Rich
