Newsletters?

I think this may have been posted before in the forums but I cant find an answer. Let me know if I should close this thread!

Are newsletters any good? I do not get subscribers very often. In fact, I only have two. Ha! But is it worth sending out newsletters? What have you learned from your personal experiences with newsletters? Why do you (or do you not) use the newsletter feature?

Personally I don't see the point of them. Maybe if I had a huge set of regular buyers it would be a useful feature, but otherwise not worth the effort.

Thanks Richard. That is what I had been thinking so far. :)

I would love to hear from more people on their experiences/thoughts!

you have to say you give out discounts or something so people want to join. but i don't use them any more. too much of a pain to set up, only a 50% rate of opening. i still collect the names, but i don't really do anything with it.

I usually try to have at least one discount up every now and then. So far I have gotten two buyers to use a discount code. (a different one each) But I agree, I don't think I will be doing anything with the few subscribers I have so far, or will get.

By offering discounts on a regular basis you are teaching your customers to wait for one.

Who pays full price on anything at Kohl's? They have coupons for everyday of the week. Better to price well and stick to it.

True, Edward, I agree. And I do mostly stick to my pricing. However, I think it is a good marketing strategy to have discounts every now and again. Just a personal opinion :)

If by newsletters you mean e-mail list, here is a thread from the other day ... you'll see my comment there.

By the way, I have yet to offer a discount and I average a 65% open rate.

and very true about the discounts - that's what they do on Z, very few buy at full price they wait for the sale. maybe if you offer it once a year or a quarter. lots of sales are usually a sign of desperation, and that your willing to remove money from the work. and because you have to explain how the code works, it kind of works against you, and if you don't and they expect a real 50% off, they will be annoyed and still not buy from you.

Yes, Mike, I sometimes say around holiday time that I don't offer discounts because I already offer my best pricing. I have had some customers email me to ask if I offer discounts like other artist do in their emails .... so, you're right, Ed people do wait for the discounts. My take is value messages ..

Every week I have sent my email newsletter to hundreds of people. I will continue to do so every week .....

Everyone complains that they don’t have enough time to spend with their customers, or social media, etc. That they don’t have enough time to call on enough customers and wish they could stay in touch with them better than they do.

The answer is to stay in touch with a weekly value message like the one that I’ve created for my newsletter.

When you look at my weekly email, look at the content, look at the value, look at the messages being offered -- a weekly, emailed value message is the easiest and least expensive method of staying in touch with all of your customers, all the time.

Even if you only send an email with a tip or a fact or something you know to be true, to every customer on your list, they will respect it, save it if it’s great, and forward it to others if there is impact or value.

Interesting and great ideas, Frank and Mike! I will take them into account for sure :) I like hearing everyone's opinions!

I would do a newsletter if I had enough email addresses to bother sending one to.

Thanks David! I was considering that option as well. But since I only have two subscribers so far, I'm not even close to making a decision.
