You Know It Is Slick When

A Fire Truck gets stuck. We aren't sure what exactly happened but believe they stopped at the sign and couldn't make it up the slight incline. We have had sleet and freezing rain most of the day so everything was covered in a nice layer of ice. The huge amount of snow we were suppose to be getting moved a bit up north of us here in Nashville.

They were probably doing fine, until they stopped and lost the forward momentun and traction. We saw on the news the ice and stuff you guys got, and we got the snow. We're roughly 2 - 2.5 hours north of Nashville.

Yes that is most likely what happened but we never did hear them on the back side street behind us.

Well really didn't want snow nor this ice but would have taken the snow over all this mess we currently have here in cold Nashvegas.

I watched a fire truck do a three hundred and sixty three degree slide right in front of me earlier this year. I'm just waiting for the next freeze.

One very bad winter morning in Columbus, Ohio, I heard a break-in at the church next door to my house. (They had a medical clinic.) I called the police, and guarded the broken window, in case he came back out the same way. But he never came out that way, he left by the side door, which is where a police cruiser was stuck at the time! So it worked out well for law and order, not so well for the burglar, and good for me, since I didn't have to fight the burglar. The particularly funny thing was that there is no hill at that location, at all.

here's the google streets view of the apartment house (we rented the downstairs) and the church. The police car was around the corner on the right side of the church, on Dennison Ave.

street view of house and church. My oldest son was born when we lived here, in September 77. This would have been that winter, I suppose.

Drive around in google street view, to see how very flat it is there. I taught around the corner, at Everett Jr. High School 1 block away. Easy Commute!

Ain't google street view great? You might think I was lying unless I posted the map showing where the alleged incident occurred!

}:-D

Old Fogy Reminiscence Sweetness. That might be a good thread, to tell a story, and illustrate the location in google maps.

Seeing the photo of the location can help you reconstruct quite a few details of a memory.

Interesting Gregory. I am on the Google street view I was on our front porch when they drove past and I am on the Google images when they came in once when I was getting my hair cut. They have me and other people blurred in the photos.

LOL John Yeah same here again today. Tractor trailers slipping and jack knifing causing interstates to be closed. Even have them sliding backwards up hills.

Living in a lake effect snow area all my life I have driven in the snow quite a bit.

I can say, with confidence, that every SINGLE case of a slide-off is caused by simply driving too fast for conditions. Even around here, where people SHOULD know better I am amazed at how many people drive too fast.

You have to drive as fast as you can stop. People get a truck or SUV with 4 wheel drive and don't seem to understand that these vehicles can't stop any faster than any other car.

I am proud to say that I have NEVER slid off the road or been in an accident in the winter. It's not a major accomplishment, I just drive slow.

I am so tired of winter!!!

When I was in my a 20's I lived outside of Boston and was driving a very pregnant friend to the hospital for her doctor appt. I hadn't driven in the snow much and going around a curve hit a slick spot ...the car flew off the road skimming a ditch and popping off the two back tires. A police officer was there in no time, we were fine, just stuck. He was young like us. He asked where we were going....took a look at my friends giant belly and turned ghost white. Got us into that police car in no time....sirens screaming all the way to the hospital.

I learned two things...brakes don't work in snow and men are terrified of a very pregnant woman :)

@Gregory I love google street view....I am considering a move out to CO and use it to check out different neighborhoods...just plop myself down and wander around.
