New Monitor

I need a new monitor - I've long known this one is crappy, but I think it's getting appreciably worse.

Anyone have a new one? What brand? What's it like? How about a score out of ten?

All depends on (a) the amount you want to spend (b) how much space you have and consequently (c) how big you want the monitor to be.
I use ViewSonic monitors as their fairly cost effective and seem to do the job adequately for my graphic needs.

it really depends on the amount you want to spend. there are some great ones for $3000. i have a viewsonic, they said it would be 10bit, it's only 8bit. be sure its LED though, they are instant on, no need to wait for a tube to warm.

Saw this elsewhere...

Incredible monitor, currently on sale, price is great if you are familiar with this

Don't know how long it's on sale. Unfortunately, two days ago it was $75 less. They changed the sale discount from $175 to $100.

I have a NEC, but just upgraded my computer to an iMac. Not sure if I'm going to short change myself by using the iMac for editing or whether to reconfigure the desk so I can use both..........
I LIKE the NEC - older model, P221W. No complaints.

I have the Asus PA249Q. The Dell equivalent now might be slightly better.

NEC PA271W - 27" full 10-bit color (& the video card to support it). Amazingly full featured monitor, most of which I need & use regularly - many others wouldn't require this featureset.

I would agree with Mike about LED backlighting but the price differential (for the LED PA272W) when I bought this one was about $500...I couldn't justify it and wasn't willing to give up screen real estate for better backlighting.

@Dan - that Dell looks pretty good...the trouble with tech - the minute you finish your research and commit to something, an improved version will come along shortly.

I would recommend the, EIZO-CG range. Superb graphic monitors! they have their own calibration program as well, goes with a large range of external calibrators.

They are rather expensive but worth every cent.

I have HP, two 22 inch monitors. Good quality. Good colors. Never had any issues. While having these two monitors, I have also used several iMacs, for two different companies designing ads/graphics. Going to work for 8hrs working on an iMac, then coming home to use my computer I can tell you, I saw no color difference, no quality difference between the two displays. Heck, I didn't even see a performance difference.
What I am getting at is, buying a iMac based on display compare to a monitor for a PC is a waste of money. My monitors at this point are probably reaching 8yrs old. For technology they should be replaced. However, there are no hot pixels, in great condition, I bought a good graphics card and I calibrate the monitors.

I give HP a 10.

I have also owned Sony and Samsung monitors. This was years ago. At the time, the Sony monitor would have been rated a 12. So I would hope Sony only got better with times on their quality. At the time I would rate Samsung, 8/9/10.. this is depending on the model you get.

In the end, go to a store like Best Buy or the such, where they have the monitors on display and look at them. Stand close enough that would be the same distance as if the monitor was on your desk. Don't compare the quality far away, as if you were watching tv. Compare close up, as if you were to actually use it. Buy what is within your price range and what looks good to you.
