Question About Pinterest

Random question... I've noticed that some artists have chosen not to allow their images to be shared to Pinterest. Is there any particular reason for this?

From what I keep reading Pinterest removes the links which go back to the original image. It is important that there is an ID on the image such as a watermark or artist signature. Metadata gets stripped out and is not enough.

I post all of my images on Pinterest. I just spot checked a few and they all went back to the FAA page for the correct image. I even checked a few that were re-pins of my original, and they all worked.

Typical artist paranoia about everyone being out to steal their work. That's why.

Iris, where dd you read it? Im very active for the last time on Pinterest, sending a lot of images out there lately - all of them working properly!
And yes , its kind of paranoia regarding the steal - by the way - do you know that it pretty easy to do it on FAA too? Go to contest - and all tne images which participating possible to drag on your computer and they are the same size as shown on Pinterest. So...prefer not paying attention for those issues.
Pinterest works PERFECTLY with hashtags - I would be happy if FAA search would work the same way! Well should I say that Im quiet happy with Pinterest marketing.

I recommend Pinterest. If you dont pin there someone else will do it for you eventually and without your links. They will get
your images off of Google image if they are interested and pin them. You have far more control by putting them up
with the links yourself.

Pinterest is long term one of the best ways for your images to be considered by people for future purchases. Pinterest
is nonstop window shopping. Some people get on Pinterest for five hours each day to window shop. If they Pin your work
they are generally complimenting it, but more specifically on occasion they are making future plans about their home
decor.

Exactly David - I already told that Im considering Pinterest as my another online shop - think this way. For shop you need to show your pictures too and they are directly taking to the FAA/ AW page where they can purchace. What bad in it? The image is 800 x 500 px - so cant be hurt even if they pick up and save for themselves.

"From what I keep reading Pinterest removes the links which go back to the original image."

Where does stuff like this come from ? Pins that link back to the original is one of the main foundations and principles behind Pinterest!

Here is an About Pinterest video produced by Pinterest. In it is this:

"And it all starts with a pin"
"A pin is a visual bookmark"
"When you click a pin it whisks you right back to the site it came from"

https://help.pinterest.com/en/guide/all-about-pinterest

I guess a good lesson here is something that we all should already know: the internet is full of misinformation. You need to be careful about what you read, the source of that information, and most of all, what you trust.

Dan,

People have found images on Google or have taken images and not used the proper links.

But by and large if you have a Pinterest board with pins you have all your links back to the POD site
for others to reference later. It is a good deal.

David,

Did you read the post I quoted? It was not that bad people steal images and do bad things with them. The post I quoted was that "Pinterest removes the links"

Pinterest.

You should certainly know that in addition to the aforementioned bad information on the internet, there are bad people, too. And they do bad things. And you cannot control them (easily).

But PINTEREST does not remove links.

Dan is correct. Pinterest leaves your links intact.

And in answer to Jessica's OP, by all means - yes. Create your own boards and post your own stuff there.

The many varied reasons are too lengthy to detail here, but suffice it to say that Pinterest has the potential to do the most beneficial social sharing (exposure of your work) to a wider variety of people than just about any other social media source.

Sean posted a rant a while back against Pinterest, don't know if he's changed his mind or not. But I see it as another free promotional tool. Some of my most trafficked images can be traced to Pinterest.

Regardless of whether you enable the pinterest button, people who use pinterest to pin things usually have a Pin It button on their browser's menu bar so they can easily pin whatever they find. They don't need your button enabled to do so. Pointless to disable it, and I get a hell of a lot of views and likely sales from myself and others pinning my work.

My opinion is that people will pin your images whether you like it or not so you may as well be in control of it. I think Pinterest is a great way to get your images seen. A little trick I use is to include color palettes swatches along with your images you post to Pinterest. It's acts as both a watermark and and sales tool because designers often are looking for new color palettes. Likewise you can use some of the designers pallets to create your art, and link back to the designers. It's a very useful trick to get the interest of interior designers.

Do you pin from your profile page to get rich pins, or from your AW to keep the people on your site?

Thanks for all the great feedback! I love Pinterest (and am slightly obsessed with it : ...) and I think it's a fantastic way to bring more exposure to our art! To touch on a little of what Heather Applegate said, it doesn't matter if your Pin It button is disabled or not because it won't stop someone from pinning that page anyways, which is what ultimately had me confused on why people were disabling them.

I hate Pinterest with a passion.
People seem to think its ok to upload an image thats not theirs to Pinterest (no link back, no mention of the original person who it belongs to).
I've lost count how many takedown notices I've sent them, must be in the region of 100+ now.

Welcome to the Digital Age. ANYTHING that can be displayed on your computer screen can be copied using 6 keystrokes at most. Period. Pinterest at least allows you a modicum of control over some of that sharing by putting your image out there with hashtags.

I pin everything....

If I didn't someone else would so I might as well be in control of it.

pintrest has in its TOS that they have the right to sell the images in some way. but they never described how exactly, and that place is a rampant theft magnet. many take images and redirect them to their own site because they can change the link after its been put up. i turned mine off for a year, but still found people putting it up there. they found other ways. so i turned it back on and posted only so i can keep some mark that its mine.

unfortunately that site will allow a user to upload content and take it from search engines and that should stop. it should at least be connected to the site they got it on. but they don't do that there.

seans original thing was - it will water down your links in the search and it does. pinterest, facebook, google plus will all come up first in the search, and when you click to see, the image isn't there because that part of the page hasn't loaded yet and to find the image you have to scroll and hunt. and it's very hard and time consuming. meanwhile your real link is buried under the pile of other links that has nothing to do with you. now some say its ok because if the go to pinterest and click the link they will end up on your page. but that's not always true. they only took the image that has my name in the file, and used that, from their own hard drive. and either the link is dead, or it goes back to the search or another page they took it from, or their own site, using that as a cover.

that's the main problem, every pin is another link spots in the search that you no longer have.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Anything that has a URL (or a URI for those pedants) can be pinned. And that means anything you can see on your screen. The only thing that stops this is a secure access site, and that wouldn't be very useful for generating sales! Plus anyone can take a screenshot, save it to their HDD and then use that as the pin to any site they want. That's the way the web works!
