Usa Vs Europe

Anyone watching the Ryder Cup?...

Looks like Europe are running away with it..!

I've got the private helicopters of the rich and famous flying over my house all day long.. I remember a few years back the Open was held at St Andrews. Some students from the town had managed to convince the megastar (and golf fan) Bill Murray to go back to theirs for a party. Some one got a shot of him doing the dishes early the next morning.. what a guy!. http://www.foxnews.com/story/2006/10/15/bill-murray-does-dishes-at-students-party-in-scotland/

Anyhoo...gowf! waste of a good walk?

What is the Ryder Cup? does that answer YOUR question?

I guess that's a rhetorical question...if not, the Ryder cup is a golf tournament in which America take on Europe. Why are you shouting YOUR Roy...? It comes across as being quite hostile Roy... do you have a bad experience related to golf which my thread reminded you of Roy? Am I just misreading you Roy?

short of answering my question...you simply raised many more Roy!

Not long ago I enticed a friend to once again take up golf after a long absence.

Myself, after having played every week for years, I attempted to give a bit of both guidance, as well as encouragement, to my friend.

Each time he hit a bad shot, he would cruse and 'carry on'. Each time I would tell him, “It's okay. It's okay.”

After several times my buddy finally turned around and said, “Walter, stop telling me it's okay. Because IT'S NOT!” LOL.

Golf is best understood by listening to the wisdom of the late, great, Robin Williams. Or, actually attempting to play the game.....

I am amazed that some folks don't have the insight to know just how difficult---and truly amazing---this shot was. (A testament to the great difficulty of the game) Not to mention the high drama involved.

“There's a good chance he doesn't get this inside, Chris Dimarco's ball.” LOL.

“In your LIFE has you seen anything like that?” LOL.

One would assume that you don't play golf, Barry?

I was disappointed that I was too busy to watch the Ryder Cup this year. By the way, congratulations to the Europeans for their win.

(Rubbish indeed! LOL....Don't forget where the sport was invented)

Now for Robin's bit on golf!

Warning! Strong adult language!

And sorry, Barry. I love golf. I am a fan. Strange you seem to give up on the fact that no one commented on your thread after only five hours. One of the greatest things playing golf---and this in only ONE lesson---taught me was patience.

My son is a golf expert and has cups. It bores the pants off me but he loves it and when they were choosing their cottage, he chose it because of its proximity to the golf course.

As he is a senior paramedic and international rescue worker, plus he runs a business teaching first aid, I suppose it gives him the quiet relaxation you only get with a round of golf.

Oh - it's cow pasture pool - invented in Scotland, I believe.

Didn't mean to shout at you - but sometimes it just comes out that way - not meaning to be rude. No, no bad experience with the 'sport', no good one either. seems kind of boring to me.

Hello, Abbie.

That is an interesting perspective: That golf gives one quiet relaxation.

Actually golf teaches one---that (in my opinion) are in-tune to the experience of golf---to be relaxed in a pressure filled environment.

Make no mistake. Even for the hacker---perhaps especially for the hacker---golf is almost always a situation wherein one must match his knowledge/wisdom with the emotions propagated by the game.

Question for you, Abbie. By “expert” do you mean your son is a scratch golfer?

FYI “scratch” generally means a golfer with a zero handicap.

You would have to ask him. As I said, it bores the pants off me.

Golf courses are pretty. Especially Spanish and south east American courses. I like playing the game...on the wii :-) I'm actually a bit of a master...on the wii.

Can't stand to watch it though. I find it really boring when alone. It can be slightly improved with good company...but generally It's not really a spectator sport.

As with the music thread Walter.. I fully appreciate the skills involved..and Tiger is undoubtedly a living legend. The best player ever methinks..!

I hear the Americans got a hole in one.. missed it... Who was that Walter? That's a little victory for them... :o)

Hi Barry.....my John was an avid golfer, of very ordinary prowess, loved his hours out with like-minded friends here, USA, EU, Canada, and especially his round at St.Andrews, whilst his aged Mother watched and waited from the Clubhouse. It is an ancient game, and always a lesson in good behaviour.
SYDNEY has world class courses, as does Melbourne.
I never had the patience for the pace of it, the weather, but loved the Club lunches, hehe. Didn't quite bore my pants off...lol!
We lost a beautiful, dear friend to golf...she was struck by lightening which travelled through her club, pinned her to the ground, and caused her death.
Another was left with permanent brain injury and a lifetime of therapy needed.
Not always fun and games, but always gracious.
Like all Sports, one soon learns the character of the players when faced with challenges, defeat, etc.
Tennis was my game.

I come from a golfing family. I find the Ryder Cup interesting and I'm sorry I missed it.

Thanks for sharing Viv.. The dangers of the game are often overlooked. I had an acquaintance who, due to a few seconds of distraction, was hit full force in the side of the head with a 5 iron. He simply dropped his towel and the wind carried it into the path of his opponents swing. He was behind the guy and tried to grab the towel before it impeded the shot. His life was completely destroyed in that moment as he was left with severe brain damage.

I do like the fact that the only real opponent faced in the game is yourself. This appeals to me. But it's the wii all the way.

edit: thanks for clearing that up Roy..

It was the legendary amateur golfer, Bobby Jones, that said:

“Competitive golf is played mainly on a five-and-a-half-inch course... the space between your ears.”
