Vivan Maiers Work Now In Limbo

Looks like this phenomenal work may be pulled from view. To everyone's potential loss imo.

I read that with great interest.
The 2 guys that have been publishing her work? I appreciate that I can see her work, but in all fairness, why isn't some of that money going back into the community? i.e. funding for photographers / artists projects, or helping out the homeless / old people in Chicago / NYC.

What a shame! Once again greed takes the lead. It looks like Maloof tried to do the right thing but it appears that opportunist Deal is in it for what he personally can get out of it. “The situation bothered me,” – seems like what bothered him was that he wasn’t getting a piece of the action. Besides, I’m not sure how they have a case. The contents of her storage locker, the film, negatives, and photos, were legally sold by the storage company in 2007 when she stopped paying rent on the unit. Maier didn’t die until two years later.

My son gave me a beautiful book of her work for my birthday. My family knows how much I love street photography and have been encouraging me to post more of it. This book and Maire’s work was intended to inspire me to do so. I guess I’d better get after it.

Only in Chicago ... I'm not proud of my fellow Chicagoans about this .... but I don't get it. Mr. Maloof bought the images so they no longer belong to the family. Whomever sold those images could have done what he did, but chose to sell them. Like I say, only in Chicago. .....

If Mr Maloof did all the things he said he did to find any heirs, I seriously doubt that Mr. Deal's claims hold water.

Eeeek, what about the books that have already been published showing her work? Will the publishers pull those from shelves? I agree that a non-profit would be best. She lived to be 83, so you have to wonder about someone who didn't have a will at that age. Maybe she didn't even know her cousins in France. Raises so many questions!

It seems senseless to just pull everything when it's bringing in $ and is obviously in demand. Best for the courts to put all future income into a trust fund until this is resolved. And Mr. Maloof should be able to recoup all the $ he invested.

Former commercial photographer and lawyer, David C. Deal is a prime example of why many people have such a visceral dislike for attorneys.

These are the kinds of cases that get copyright laws changed. Let's hope that happens here.
