Impressionistic Vs Realistic Painting

As I was browsing through some artwork here at FAA I would see thumbnail photos of paintings that looked realistic/photographic...but......When I clicked on the image, it was not realistic at all...but blurred, indistinct. I now wonder if the basic difference between realistic paintings and impressionist...is that the first is viewed close-up, ...and the impressionist version seen "from a distance"...

Has less to do with viewing distance than what happens with the play of light and color. Technically impressionist favor alma prima and dry brush over glazing due to the speed in which they need to work.

It was just a funny impression I had...As mentioned I saw a photo of art that looked just like a photo...til clicked on...then it was clearly undefined.I thought that for some unexplained reason that perhaps it had to do with image processing...how the eye perceives the subject and conveys that image through that medium...I didnt know it related to brush technique...More to do with visual interpretation.. Guess Ill have another glass of wine! lol!

Judy...there are different styles/ways of creating "photo-realism". Some styles can be viewed up close and be seen as "tight"/"realistic"...other styles of photo-realism are done in a style that looks nothing like real up close...but from a certain distance it looks like a photo.

It's not the wine ;)

I was really referring to how it is conceptually/ visually created ......more than the visual outcome..I didnt explain it very well...

Makes you wonder if Monet was actually near sighted. Lol

I do straight images with very little post processing, and then I do, what I hope, are neo expressionist photographs using semi abstract buildings/people, and giving it all vivid colors (see the Wild Beasts of Color as in Fauvism.

I can only do so many straight images of poor folks without getting a tad too depressed, hence I then switch to fantasy to help what's left of my sanity.

That is interesting Chuck! @Judy I understand what you are saying as I have wondered as well. Some really when looking closely are not photo perfect, rather blurred. Still beautiful.

Yes, that is what I was referring to.. I recall an artist that painted dots...He did so because he had an eye disease that caused him to paint in that fashion..I was just wondering if the same was true for impressionist or other diverse painting styles.. Just how much of our styles culminate from our vision...literally and figuratively!
