Any Lead Is A Good Lead

This is why I have business cards at the ready near the front door.

[To add: I shot this video today after being inundated this past week with salespeople. I got so fed up with things I decided to flip the tables and give them my business card.]

“What is going on here?”

I too was not at all sure. I had to follow the link to find out that
Grandkin Studios is in fact Jeff Campbell.

Now it makes sense!

I remember well in my early twenties (21 and 22) traveling the country as a door to door salesman selling film and print packages for a company called Panacolor Labs. I also sold vacuum cleaners, Solar water heaters, and cookware. All before becoming a photographer.

Meanwhile, in my state, county, and city, door to door salespeople are now all but extinct. Well, I do live in a gated community and there are perhaps more of these folks around than I am aware of.

At any rate, I meet a lot of folks everyday and am always ready with a sales pitch of my own.

Ohh, Rich did not realise this was my video? Got it. He can stand to learn a thing or two from the [us] younger generation. :-)

Good job, Jeffrey, and I'm wishing my electric bill was only $60 a month.

Dude! I wonder if this would work on the Johovas and Mormons that stop by my front door.

I've purchased one item from a door to door salesman in the last 10 years. How many matted prints can I present in two hands? Maybe fan about 3 of them out with my left hand while giving my 30 second spill or simply hand them about 5 right when they open the door. But what if they close the door with my prints in hand? Those would have SAMPLE across them! This might work but what about permits and business license? Hey, everyone loves a fundraiser. Just have the kids go around the neighborhood and hustle the prints for you!!

A project I've been meaning to get to for many years, is to install one of those peep hole devices in my front door. For now, I take a look out the window to see who has rang the door bell or knocked. Just awhile back, I answered the door and there was a pushy salesman there on the steps and he kept talking really fast trying to get his spiel out, and I told him 3-4 times I wasn't interested. Finally, I held my hand up and bluntly, forcefully told him "Get off my porch now!". He actually had the nerve to ask me "Why?". He saw that I was not in the mood and quickly left.

Just recently I was in my driveway caulking the expansion joints, and I heard a vehicle pull up my driveway. I looked to see a pickup truck with two guys in it, so I got up to talk to the driver who had already approached me. He told me who he was, and that he represented some company that sold meat, and in his spiel he also added that he was a "Christian man". I told him I had just been to the store and was good to go, but he said, how about a couple of free steaks and some chicken. I told him no thank you, I don't need it. I have a lot of rules/standards, and one of them is that I don't buy or accept meat being sold out of a freezer in the back of a pickup truck. Oh, in his opening spiel he also stated that my neighbor told him to stop at my house because I do a lot of grilling out. That's BS, as I barely use my grill.

I absolutely have business cards at the ready. They are a cheap form of getting one's name/business in front of people. I use the basic card from VistaPrint but uploaded my own image (the one in my profile here) and do pay for the premium glossy card stock. I have had compliments on the card itself - which may or may not give a good impression about the quality of my photography.

The best part of door-to-door sales people is, they are coming to your door! :)

But, I don't want them coming to my door, even if it's to give them a business card. My point being, is that if they're selling door-to-door, they may not (just speculating) have the income to afford prints from here. I suppose I need to post one of those "No Soliciting" signs.

I agree wholeheartedly, Greg. I hate when they come to my door, too. But, if they want to be insistent they will get my sales pitch right back at them.

:) Good point. I just don't have a lot of patience for door-to-door salesmen.

Jeffrey -

Good one!! LOL :)

I'd do the same thing now if I didn't live in a gated and guarded neighborhood which is impossible to enter without permission. Before living here I used to engage anyone who tried to sell door to door to me (products, religions, etc) by interrupting them and peddling my wares to them. They didn't last long and moved along.

Donna,

I had salespeople the past four evenings at dinnertime - enough is enough. "Give me a quick sales pitch and I'll do the same." :)

Jeffrey, you have your sales speech down pretty well. You are poised for business at each opportunity. Very innovative. I admire you for that!

I don't really want anyone coming to my door! I have two "no solicitations" signs that were left by the previous owner. I haven't taken those down, and noticed that doesn't stop the religious types from knocking, because they say they are not soliciting. Oh well... :) I may as well take them down, anyway, since it's cute when the school kids come around with cookies and stuff.

I don't mind supporting (and often do) the kids, Patricia, because I used to sell chocolate bars when I was young. I have learned, though, it does not matter how many non-solicitation signs that are put up, people will still come knocking and play ignorant. The only deterrent is a pitbull on the porch :)

I'm going to continue and see how many business cards I can hand out this summer :)

They are soliciting after life insurance.

My hubby can talk the ear off any salesperson. I came home once from shopping to see him talking to one backing down the sidewalk! Needless to say they don't show up at our house much anymore, just wish the same were true of spammy duct cleaning phone calls!

Cool video!

Diane,

That is too funny! This was my first attempt, but I'm sure I will get better at my door-to-door salesmanship. :)

At Halloween, especially, but at other times if I see the door to door folks in the neighborhood - " I " have a water sprinkler that pretty much takes care of both sides of the walk up to the door. I'm sure that none of them are/were catholics or methodists

Lynn Palmer

I generally don't answer the door, or if I do I don't let them see inside. I don't want them to case the place and come back later to rob me.

I don't like door to door sales unless its girl scouts, boy scouts or a legit school fundraiser. I don't mind helping a kid out, even the kids who are just looking for work. BUT I'm not paying a kid $20 to use my lawn mower to mow ONLY my front lawn, not including blowing the leaves/raking and edging. It only takes about 15min max to just mow my front lawn....
