A Painting Found Behind The Wall...

I have a close associate who lives in Florida. He told me a story about a faux wall he and his wife found behind a closet in their home. They are not the original owners and swear that they never knew about the wall. It was held together with four screws I was told and when he went to remove the drywall, there was a painting behind it hidden. He's bringing it over tomorrow and he has no idea about it's value. I asked him to photo graph the wall and the painting just the way it sat behind the wall before he took it out. The painting was facing the inside of the wall but on the back was a hand written note. My friend says that it highlights a story about a drawing someone did of Stevie Ray Vaughn performing. When he removed the painting from behind the wall, he stated that was apparently a hand painted version of the drawing on to a canvas. He also stated that there was writing on the front of the painting and a very unique signature of someone that he believes to have been Stevie Ray Vaughn himself. I am wondering if there are or have been any undiscovered or missing pictures, lithos, paintings or the like of the late great Stevie Ray Vaughn. The story he told me alone reminded me of National Treasure. I know he passed in 1990 from a helicopter crash but is it possible that this picture could be worth something in the art scene or perhaps to the Hardrock the Cafe or the like? I will see it tomorrow when he brings it over and post the photos on line. Could be a great find if not a great story!

I'd get the word out somehow. Even if it's not worth much, it's a cool story. He may could donate or sell it to a museum or SRV's estate or just have a cool feature done on it by the local news. Who knows? He could be standing at the crossroads! He should definitely explain to folks what to do if the house is a'rockin'

Or he could just hang it on the wall, too!

Thank you Joseph. I'll let him know I've put the word out. I'd seen SRV prints n originals around the the web from $25.00 to $4,500.00. The owners full of great stories to share. My hope is that it is an original and has value to the market. Thank you for your follow up.

Jeff, try entering "paintings of Stevie Ray Vaughan" into your google search (without quotes) and you will see quite a few. While there, you can also research prices on the paintings and art prints.

On Wiki it says this about him..." Attending Justin F. Kimball High School during the early 1970s, Vaughan's late-night gigs contributed to his neglect in his studies, including music theory; he would often sleep during class.[26] Although his musical career pursuit was disapproved by many of the school's administrators, he was encouraged by many to strive for a career in art, including his art teacher.[27][nb 6] In his sophomore year, he attended an evening class for experimental art at Southern Methodist University, but bailed when it conflicted with rehearsal.[27] Vaughan later spoke of his dislike of the school and stated that he had to receive a daily note from the principal about his grooming.[28]"...

That is super cool

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in Cleveland has not yet inducted him (no idea why not) perhaps if he does come up and they have authenticated it by then, they might be a suitable venue for it as well

They also might want to do a search on the prior home owners in case there's more to the story!

Hello everyone;
I cannot thank you enough for your expert insight and opinions on the photograph that I'm going to post. I was able to find a copy of one images online and found the author of the book about Stevie Ray Vaughan. Craig Hopkins is the writer and had the same image in his book about SRV. Turns out there are lithographs of this panting of SRV playing guitar and the Lenny Chords. I saw a photo of one for sale on the web but I've only found one out i we mysterious photos are in fact lithographs. According to sources that I've located on the web and the above mentioned, the original painting and accompanying document are located in the International Guitar Hall of Fame of Cooperstown, NY USA. I am trying to reach out to them to indicate whether or not they have the original in their museum. If so, then I'll know my associate's unique find is just that - a $ 50.00 lithograph. Where can I post the photo?

This is an interesting story in deed, the panel being screwed into the closet wall that is interesting, why.....then I started thinking what if the house was actually a bar or something else and renovated back into a home again,,,,it happens all the time here in New Orleans what may have been a corner store turned back into a residence.

or who ever owned the house prior to your friend, someone liked that print and someone along the line carefully preserved it.....

The real mystery is WHY it was in the wall...I agree do a real estate search to see who exactly lived in the house....not saying turn it over to them....just out of curiosity sake.

Is it a painting or a litho? If it's a painting it might be what the lithos are taken from, in which case it's the original. That's be worth more than $50.

I'm wondering if there is a place that I can post the artwork on this website so that those who've been helping me can see what I was talking about? Any help is appreciated.

you can bring the original into an art gallery or maybe a museum, and ask there. we aren't really experts in art, and even if we were, they would have to see it in person to see if it's a copy, a print or whatever. even if a gallery can't help they may know someone that can.
