Self Improvement - Photography Style

Something I think that is incredibly important in photography is self awareness, and improvement. So I ask this question....

What is the biggest area for improvement in your own work?

I'll answer first. I get tunnel vision, too focused on the shot I think I want to make, many times I fail to slow down and truly look around, and find the better shot I hadn't though of before. I can spend too long trying to MAKE something work, and I miss something better. Great light is fleeting, you have to sometimes take what it gives you instead of making something that isn't there.

"What is the biggest area for improvement in your own work?"

Digital photography helped me with my still work, because when I shot 35mm, each subject got one... maybe two shots.

Now I am not afraid of running out of film and I can shoot less-perfect shots that I may use in other ways.

I think right now, being able to step outside the box of the "standard" shot. Some years back I was doing more "detail" shots of things rather than whole views of things. Not only was it artistically very satisfying, a lot of what I did stood out more. I've gotten away from that somewhat. Might be a good goal for this year.

I have none, I am perfect.... Buahahahahahahaha

OK, I should really not get six inches away from a wild rattlesnake in the future, but then, I probably will anyway if given the right conditions.

Seriously, I want to learn how to shoot people. Not that I really want to do it that often, but I would like to know how to do it well.

Still life photography. I'm terrible at setting up. If it's already "arranged" in nature, I can usually spot it and make a pretty good image, but setting up the artificial, on-the-table still life....not so much. I started a thread asking for advice on that subject about a week ago. I have to try out all the suggestions I got.....

lacking on some technical areas that I'm really going to have to relearn. I say relearn because I don't remember all the nuances of shutter speeds and aperature settings and I don't think it ever set in the first time around, mostly I remember it all seemed backwards from what I thought they should mean. It will handicap what I can do ultimately if I don't buckle down and relearn so...dang it all! I want a cheat sheet!

for digital art - to be able to draw better and to create the proper perspective with the right shadow.

@Mike, practice drawing this way - turn a picture upsidedown and draw it that way on your tablet, from the book "Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain". Start with a simple still life, then try a face, so on and so forth...it will make a huge difference.

JC, did you have anyone in mind that you wanted to shoot from the forum?
With Abbie, AWOL, I figured you'd have a few in mind to knock off.

Well, I am MORE than well trained to shoot people in one way, just not the other. When it comes down to it, gingers in lingerie would work if there are any volunteers.

Same as you Thomas. I get an idea in my mind of what I WANT to shoot and I become obsessed with getting the shot I see in my mind rather than staying open to the possibilities nature gives me. A must for landscape photographers. Although, I had an opportunity to do this just a few days ago and I think the result turned out great. I'll let you know for sure after I've had time to properly view and process the photos. Just got in from driving seven hours, so I'm a little wonky. :-)

I agree to not get stuck in one shooting mode, your brain wants to say "this won't work, this will work!" You can't always calculate the light and how it will affect a subject so shoot it anyway!

Sure Marlene, chime in. I am just a photographer so I seem to zero in on photography. Painters welcome!

Wigs don't work Thomas, it is the SO much more than the hair color with gingers.....

Anyway, I think that post might be better off in Bill's dating/what artists need thread anyway.
