Anyone Staying Up For The Blood Moon

I'm planning on trying to get a couple of hours of sleep and then go out and take pictures of the moon (clouds permitting). I should be clearing up around then.

I was just looking out at the moon. Not sure if I have the right equipment to really grab it properly.

Cloudy here.

@Craig, maybe you should photograph it improperly. Might get something unique. ;)

i'm up for it, however the clouds are starting to build here... just have to wait and see...

All i have is my point and shoot Olympus and i'll be taking some snaps if it's visible...

Rainy and cloudy here...wish I could see it!

Too cloudy here, unfortunately. Earlier, we had snow flurries. Yes, in April. God I hate the Midwest.

@Craig. I find that manual focus and manual exposure work best. The moon is itself a lot brighter than one would think. Reduce the exposure until you see detail. I am usually at about 1/200 with 100iso (don't recall the aperture, but you can fiddle from there.) I often use a fully manual older lens, but anything that can be manually focused should work. Good luck!

I need a bigger lens! But you are right about the higher shutter speeds. Thanks for the tip.I have a half broken Tamron 300 I am playing around with.

I'm in the central time zone. I took a few test shots between midnight and one am. The moon is full and the sky clear. With luck and a little insomnia, I may get something worthwhile. BTW, I have a Sony HX300 with a 50 power optical zoom and a 20mp sensor. I've had good luck from a tripod in the past. It will be interesting to compare the shots from around the country/world.

I took a few shots with my 400mm but not sure if I have anything I want to post. I was not planning on doing it but was up anyway. Half-hearted effort really since there will be much better photos than what I can do. Just for fun.

Very cloudy here:(

Like i said. I didn't put the effort in because I was just not up to it. But here is what I got.

This is a photo I took in the UK last night, http://instagram.com/p/myEe9AvEU2/
as its not an eclipse in the UK its probably not what you are really referring to as a blood moon
Taken using an Olympus E-PL5 with a 300mm lens and in fully manual mode for both focus and exposure

Sorry, the link doesn't show correctly

I've had better luck with the moon on other nights, here's what I got tonight...

Update: I sent my photo in to the local KVUE (ABC) affiliate. It got a generous introduction by the weatherman and it's on the rotation in their morning news. Look Ma - I'm almost famous! ;)

The moon is very bright like HW says. I love full moons when its cloudy actually, because I can paint with light while the moon is in the background lighting up my backdrop but not blowing out the highlights. 10 minute exposure, a couple years back.

I ended up hitting the rack before the cycle completed. Have lots to do today. Will have to practice before the next one which is October and maybe rent a super lens to get closer.
@Mark=Nice full cycle and congrats on the local t.v. shout out.
@Bradford= There will always be that one who specializes in astronomy shots with the 1000 mm attached to a telescope platform.

We had snow last night. No red moon!

I was going to go somewhere but it was snowing when I got up. I got up a little later, and it was clear. So I just took a lot of photos from our front yard. Then just after totality it clouded over. I'll process my stuff shortly and post something. Probably will look much like Bradford's.

Congratulations, Mark!
I stayed up and we had a clear sky...but I'm not a photographer...i just enjoyed it! ;)

Good grief, the insomniac in me was up and I didn't know about it ... we had clear skies and it would have been wonderful to go out and moon gaze. :(

@ Mark - congratulations - and NICE shots!

Here's one of mine, my first attempt at a moon shot. What is the name of the star to the lower right (I believe it's in Virgo)?

Sell blood moon

Louise Reeves

I believe that "star" is actually a planet. I saw it too and the way to tell what it is is to see if it is a steady light or twinkling. Steady=planet, twinkle=star.

I took several shots up until 2am, then gave up. Too many clouds and the eclipse was too slow.

Bradford Martin

I believe it was Venus below it. Mars was off to the right of it.
Correction. The one below the moon is Spica. A blue giant. It is of to the lower right in Steven's photo.

mars was up and to the right

Here's mine. 300mm + 1.4x TC, f/10, 1/2 second, ISO 6400. I took 52 shots and stacked them using Registax, which averages the shots and reduces camera noise and atmospheric distortion.

Nice one Alexis. I found something similar that will work on a Mac, so I'm going to try that as well.

Awesome shot Alexis! Wow. Love the timeline photos Steven! Very cool.

Here's mine, just for fun... It was a great night. Had an owl come check out what I was doing and saw several shooting stars too.

What Great Photos!!

I was up during the eclipse, but there was a light cloud cover. so no moon

Before the eclipse, there was a silvery glow in the sky though.

I was hoping, that there would also be a red glow during the eclipse.

Which might be considered another but rather different image of this earth's sunsets/sunrises.

Since, the red glow comes directly from the reflected glow of the earth's sunsets and sunrises.

Unfortunately, the glow was to faint to penetrate the cloud cover.

So, no photo

Vey cool shots everyone! Thanks for sharing. I can see it vicariously through your photos since it was cloudy here in VA and I was also fast asleep at 2 am! zzzzzzzzzzzzz :-)

" I " did not - the wife did. I've seen them before - I don't have the lens to capture it - I can see better photo's almost anywhere on the internet - I'm an OLD man and need my beauty rest - not that it will help.
