The Stillwater Public Library is proud to the announce the opening of Tribes: Many Faces, One People a photography exhibit featuring portraits of Native American dancers by Star Prairie, WI, photographer, Tom Lindfors. Selections in the show resonate with the themes of this year's Valley Reads.

Lindfors’ black and white portraits document dancers during powwows around the country. They were created in the field using Polaroid film and a large format 4x5 view camera. He chose to use a large format camera to mimic the logistical challenges faces by historic photographers like Edward Curtis and Gertrude Kasebier. His recent portraits are the result of collaborations with Native American artists and often employ digital techniques to incorporate multiple layers of content central to an individual’s story.

Lindfors’ photographs have been exhibited at museums and galleries from Chicago to Santa Fe as well as overseas. A number of images belong to private collections including the permanent archives of the International Polaroid Collection. He is a past president of the Midwest Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers. He loves living in Star Prairie but still doesn’t understand how there can be so many county roads named “C”.

Tribes closes April, 2012.
