The Minneapolis Club Announces The Opening Of Tribes Many Faces One People An Exhibition By Photographer Tom Lindfors

Minneapolis, MN (November 8, 2012) - The Minneapolis Club is proud to the announce the opening of Tribes: Many Faces, One People, a photography exhibit featuring historic photographs of Native Americans from the Club’s Edward Sheriff Curtis collection along with contemporary portraits of Native American dancers from the collection of Star Prairie, WI, photographer, Tom Lindfors. Edward Curtis was an American photographer born in 1868 in Madison, Wisconsin. His masterpiece, The North American Indian, included 20 volumes of text, more than 1500 full-page illustrations, accompanied by 20 portfolios containing more than 700 copperplate photogravures. The Edward Curtis Gallery at the Minneapolis Club proudly displays 12 of these Photogravures that were given as a gift from Andrew Scott in the Club’s 100th year.
Lindfors’ black and white portraits document dancers during powwows around the country. They were created in the field using Polaroid film and a large format 4x5 view camera to mimic the logistical challenges faced by historic photographers like Curtis. His recent portraits are the result of collaborations with Native American artists and often employ digital techniques to incorporate multiple layers of content central to an individual’s story.
Lindfors’ photographs have been exhibited at museums and galleries from Chicago to Santa Fe as well as overseas. A number of images belong to private collections including the permanent archives of the International Polaroid Collection. He is a past president of the Midwest Chapter of the American Society of Media Photographers and conducts a series of photography workshops called The Studio Sessions.
Tribes runs from November 2nd through January 31st, 2013.
