January 26th, 2015 - Nassau, ba
The Cuban Ambassador to The Bahamas, Hon .Ernesto Guzman' recently visited
the studios of Alex Miller , a self taught Artist / Designer and Activist .
During the tour Ambassador Guzman informed Mr. .Miller of various cultural
programmes available for access in Cuba and extended an invitation to
participate. A painting of Nelson Mandela was presented to The Ambassador
in commemoration of the role Cuba played in the fight against apartheid.
The following is a Press Release from Alex Miller to mark ths occasion:
The World has recently lost one of the greatest Freedom Fighters and
leaders ever...Nelson Mandela. I would like to pay homage to this immortal
icon and emphasize injustices such as The U.S.A. Embargo onbroihierThe innocent , peaceful people of Cuba remain in place ; The persistent
exploitation of recourses of small Nations such as the Bahamas and
Caribbean continue. As a result of imposing their Colonial will and
capitalist might; external elements continue to enrich themselves on the
backs of the indigenous masses are relegated to a life of despair
and poverty. Consequently, our people are subjected to a form of de facto
apartheid!!
As an Artist I feel obligated , (like the great Jose Marti who used his
pen in the fight to gain independence from Spain) ;.to use my brush to make
a difference by exposing wrong and consequently accurately depict
historical realities.
In this vain ; I am compelled to acknowledge and salute the people of Cuba
and their leader President Raul Castro for the role the Cuban People played
in the war against apartheid .History will reveal how Cuba under the
command of another outstanding leader of our time , Fidel Castro; made the
ultimate sacrifice in Angola.
I think it is only fitting and proper to present this portrait of Mandela
to President Fidel Castro as a token of appreciation of his and the Cuban
people's struggle for liberty; and equality for. all. The Struggle
Continues !
Viva Fidel !
