The Yellow Warbler (Setophaga petechia), a member of the family Parulidae, is a common warbler species found throughout most of the United States. It is found low in trees, along woodland edges and orchards, and near wet areas. It measures about 5 inches in length and about 0.33 ounces in weight. Being the most yellow of the New World warblers, the breeding male has a yellow face, mostly yellow body, chestnut streaks on its breast and flanks, black eyes, plump body, and a short yellow tail. Much geographic variation is seen in this species, resulting in the distinction of 37 sub-species divided among four groups. Preferred diet includes insects and arthropods captured by gleaning, and occasionally fruit.
