Description
Stomach ulcer: barium X-ray showing an ulcer in the body of the stomach. The ulcer crater appears as the small, white mushroom shape that stands up from the body of the stomach. This X-ray was taken after the subject had swallowed a quantity of radio-opaque barium meal. Details of the folds of the stomach lining are enhanced by the additional introduction of air - the so-called double-contrast method. This profile view of the ulcer crater can indicate whether it is benign or malignant. Here, the ulcer appears set apart from the stomach wall, with the folds of the mucosa (stomach lining) extend to the crater's edge. Both these factors suggest a benign course.
