Description
Two blue and white wooden rowboats are beached on a dense bed of reeds beside a clear water channel, with thatched-roof huts visible in the background under a cloudy sky. This photo was taken on the Uros Floating Islands in Lake Titicaca near Puno, Peru. The islands belong to the indigenous Uros or Uru people and are one of Peru's best known tourist attractions. The islands and the houses (some of which can be seen in the background) are made from totora reeds (Schoenoplectus californicus subsp. tatora) which grow in huge numbers in the shallower parts of the lake. The reeds are also used for making boats and turn a beautiful golden yellow colour when they dry out.
