Description
Winter stars without light pollution. View of the night sky over mountains, showing the Milky Way and stars visible in the absence of light pollution. This view is of winter stars in the Northern Hemisphere, and was taken with a 600-second exposure. From the mountains the night sky is very dark and countless stars are seen. Far fewer stars are visible when viewed from more inhabited areas such as the countryside or a city. For a sequence showing the effects of varying levels of light pollution over the year and in different locations, see images C025/1412 to C025/1423.
