Description
A Western Tiger Swallowtail butterfly alights on a thistle flower in the Santa Rita Mountains of southern Arizona, located halfway between Tucson and the Mexican border. Even though this butterfly is found in many localities west of the Mississippi River, Arizona has selected it to be the Arizona Sate Butterfly. It is also known as a two-tailed swallowtail, though this creature here seems to have lost its starboard horizontal stabilizer somewhere along the path of life.
Known scientifically as Papilio rutulus, this common butterfly is between three and four inches wide. Its common range is from British Columbia south to the western portion of southern California and the higher elevations of New Mexico and Arizona. Those higher elevations include the Sky Islands, those mountains that rise above the deserts of southern Arizona.
