Description
Saw these two at Homosassa Springs State Park in central Florida. Though somewhat hawk like in appearance they are actually from the falcon family and to further confuse the identity they are also known as a Mexican Eagle. The one time zoo was obtained by the state which sent all non native species to other zoos and venues all that is except for a Hippopotamus which no one wanted or could take on the expense of moving it. So other than Lu (Hippo) the remainder of parks denizens are all native and or migratory to the state of Florida. For nature lovers, children and others the preserve has many attractions including an underwater observatory where you can view manatees and various fish species. A lot of the birds are or were injured and is one reason they are there. A panther cub was recently added after being abandoned in the wild. The panthers along with pair of bears, wolves and fox can make some feel as if the designation of zoo is more appropriate.
Along with the caracara are eagles, owls, endangered whooping cranes, wood ducks, pelicans and many, many more.
A nominal fee is charged and once paid you can take a pontoon down Pepper Creek or a shuttle to trailhead that will lead you into the park.
Park is located at 4150 S Suncoast Blvd , Homosassa Florida.
