Description
I managed to get this shot as we were gliding slowly down Pepper Creek in a pontoon to one of the trails where you can view a lot of Floridas native birds, animals, manatees, fish, snakes, aligators and a non native Hippopotamus. The area is Homosassa Springs Wilderness State Park home to what was once a zoo that was taken over by the state of Florida. The then residents were placed in new homes and the park became a refuge for native creatures of Florida only. Only that is except for "Lucy" a massive Hippopotamus that no one was willing to accept and is now 50 years old and is the only exception to the native species only claim. The bird that caught his dinner here is called Anhinga and is quite common throughout the state. The day was filled with many opportunities to watch the inhabitants in their natural environs. The staff were very knowledgeable and quick to point out things that might not have been evident to people there for their first time. There was even an area for several Eagles that had been injured in one way or another and were being cared for by the park. One other area of interest is an underwater fish observatory that was a big hit with park patrons.
Photos from this shoot will be added soon and more of my work can be seen here in FAA or at www.jimcookphotography.com

Amazing capture! That looks like a big/spiky fish (it looks way too big for that her long/skinny neck! Do you know what kind it is?) staring down its captor's throat here! So does she really manage to win the battle and gulp that whole thing okay? Does the fish put up a good fight, if eaten does the unlucky prey get swallowed wriggling all the way down as well?!
Jim Cook replied:
Thanks Kyle! I can't say what happened after the photo was taken. The pontoon I was on was going in one direction and the anhinga was going in opposite direction and they were soon out of sight.

What an absolutely gorgeous shot. Wonderful rich color scheme, almost monochromatic, and such a great capture. Love the way its tail just shows under water. f/v
