Description
I was fascinated by the dramatic folds of the long coat he is wearing, and since the best view is from the back, that's how I photographed him. The statue is of Daniel Webster, one of the greatest early politicians of America. Webster represented the state of Massachusetts as a United States Senator, and served the country as Secretary of State. He began his career as a lawyer and then as a congressman, and was well-known for his great oratorical skills, whether in a small-town courtroom, before the Supreme Court, in the chambers of Congress, or on the political stump. He ran three times for the presidency of the United States, losing each of his bids. This statue of Daniel Webster is on Massachusetts Avenue at Scott Circle in Washington DC (near Webster's home at 1603 Massachusetts Avenue).
