Description
Supernova core, 3D supercomputer model. As a massive star exhausts the hydrogen and helium fusing at its core, it loses the heat that prevents it collapsing under its own weight. Further nuclear fusion involving other elements destabilises the star, and the core collapses in less than a second. A rebounding shock wave blows off the outer layers of the star at thousands of kilometres per second. The core may continue to collapse, forming a black hole and warping space-time. This simulation was obtained in 2009 using parallel volume rendering on the Blue Gene/P supercomputer at the Argonne National Laboratory, USA.
