Description
Summer cotton winter woods by Karen Cook " The leaves fall, the wind blows and the farm country slowly changes from the summer cotton to the winter woods" - Henry Beston
The first snowfall of the season has wrapped the farm fields in a world of white. The rows of the fields have been plowed to precision, leaving stripes of snow-covered soil leading to the old farmhouse as if to lead the way to the warmth of the wood stove inside the kitchen.
I love the silence of this world. It is as if the farm is sleeping, or hibernating through winter, waiting for the burst of green that is Spring. And the quote by Henry Beston about the farm country changing from summer cotton to winter woods seemed to sum up the feeling perfectly.
Henry Beston (1888-1968) was an American writer and naturalist whose most famous work is titled The Outermost House, which is considered a literary classic and one of the main reasons for the founding of the Cape Cod National Seashore. Beston wrote the novel while living on the iconic coast of Massachusetts. Beston is considered to be one of the founding fathers of what is now called the modern environmental movement,.
See you in the spring when your winter woods have once again started to change to summer cotton
