Description
A beautiful round stone funerary tower (called a chullpa), one of several burial towers at Molloco / Molloko near the southern shore of Lake Titicaca not far from Puno (Acora is the closest village). The stone construction suggests they were probably built by the Incas when they occupied the Titicaca basin and altiplano regions known as Collasuyo, the southern quarter of the Inca empire (whose inhabitants were called Collas by the Incas). Chullpas (usually built of adobe / mud bricks rather than stone) were widely used across the altiplano for the dead of the ruling and upper classes of the tribes who inhabited the region before arrival of the Incas. The bodies were usually wrapped in textiles and placed inside sitting in a fetal position.
