Description
These big, long-tailed parakeets are native to southern Asia and central Africa. Despite the onslaught of urbanization and deforestation, the rose-ringed parakeet is one of the few parrot species that has successfully adapted to sharing habitats with dense human populations. Escaped and wandering birds are very adaptable as they have managed to establish feral populations in many diverse regions of the globe.
As a consequence of their popularity in the pet trade, escaped birds have colonized a number of cities around the world, including populations in Northern and Western Europe. Most of them settle around cities, in areas as diverse as Hong Kong, Singapore, Jerusalem, Paris, and London. In addition, there are wild flocks In the U.S. around Los Angeles and Bakersfield, California, and around Naples, Florida, with scattered sightings in many other locales.
Though they make good pets and are commerically available, Spadecaller prefers to create images that reflect the parrot’s original habitats in the wild. "Ring-necked Parakeets in the Wild," is a hand-painted digital image and photo composite created in Spadecaller’s Florida Studio on 11/21/2022.
