Artist's Description
The Queen Conch Shell is a large, strong, and beautiful adult shell of the queen conch. It is also known as, "the Pink Conch"; in French, it is known as, "Le Strombe"; in Haitian Creole, it is known as, "Lambi"
The Queen Conch is found in the following places: warm shallow waters, sea grass beds, coastal meadows, outer reefs or sand flats. They are herbivores. They eat algae.
The Queen Conch Shell has been used as a wind instrument by blowing into the shell as if it were a trumpet or a blowing horn.
The Queen Conch Shell has historical values to Haitians:
During slavery, it was used by overseers to call the slaves to start their 18 hr day work from 6:00 AM to midnight.
During slave rebellions, it was used to communicate from hill to hill. It was also used to alert slaves from impendent danger and the need to assemble.
Today, the symbol of the Queen Conch Shell represents: freedom from slavery, strength, and resilience of Haitians.

Carol Senske
Hi, Nicole:>) I was watching Petko's video and noticed this painting - the scars stood out yet the man is strong and straight. It's sad that mankind can be so cruel yet the individual spirit and bravery wins out! Perhaps calling this painting beautiful isn't the right word, but it is beautiful in the way it shows an unbending spirit to be free. You are remarkable:>). On a less serious note, I hope your daughter and grandson are thriving, and I hope we will soon be treated to a painting of the little guy. V/F
Nicole Jean-Louis replied:
Thank you so much, Carol! I value your comment. My daughter and grandson are doing well. I will surely paint the little guy some time soon.
