Description
This is a live female chinese mantis laying her eggs (egg casing) which can produce over one hundred baby mantises. It was taken in my photo studio using a 140 macro lens. I purchased this butterfly (citrus swallowtail) from a butterfly dealer, which I placed on the artificial plant to see what the female mantis what do! To my surprise, it appeared to react in a way where it was trying to protect it's young from this unwanted visitor! A very interesting scene. After photographing this, I immediately removed the butterfly before the mantis got to it, otherwise it would have damaged or possibly ruined it! They are expensive and you must be very careful when handling them, they are very fragile!

A beautiful shot, and I am intrigued by your technique. Where did you find this species of mantis? I was wondering how you got the butterflies to the orchids. Now I know. Jim
