Description
Poppies at the Tower of London photograph was taken in the evening of 31st October 2014. This installation is called Blood Swept Lands and Seas of Red, marking the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War. Devised by ceramic artist Paul Cummins, with setting stage designer Tom Piper and planted by a multitude of volunteers. 888,246 ceramic poppies will be planted with each poppy representing one British soldier who fell in WW1.
It is now November 2014, the planted ceramic poppies have now filled the extremely large moat of the Tower of London in England. The resulting display is truly amazing. The number of people viewing this astounding work for themselves is incredible. We were extremely touched by the Last Post tune being played at dusk. We really felt the poignancy in our hearts by this as the spontaneous applause burst out in the gathering dusk from the massive crowd. It made us totally grateful to all those heroic people who gave the ultimate sacrifice to ensure our freedom and way of life today. Thank you to every service person who gave so much to us and continue to do so every minute of everyday.
These actual ceramic poppies can be bought by going onto the Tower of London website.
