Description
Calcium. Polarised light micrograph of a thin section of calcium. Calcium is a soft, silvery- white metal. As a metal it is used in the extraction of thorium, vanadium and zirconium. It is also used in the manufacture of alloys and as a deoxidant in casting. In the body, calcium plays a crucial role. It is a constituent of body fluids, cells, bones and teeth. The average adult needs to consume about 1g per day. Calcium is essential for the correct function of many body processes, including the nervous system, muscle contractions and blood clotting. The uptake of calcium into the body is controlled by vitamin D. Magnification: x35 at 6x7cm size.
