Heating marble. Chip of marble (calcium carbonate, CaCO3) being heated by the gas flame of a bunsen burner to produce lime or quicklime (calcium oxide, CaO) and carbon dioxide gas (CO2). Lime is produced commercially by decomposing calcium carbonate at temperatures of 900-1200 degrees celsius. Calcium carbonate occurs naturally in a number of forms, including limestone, chalk and calcite.
