The name of this painting is Orange Claret Cups. It is an illustrative style watercolor painting of orange claret cup blooms on a hedgehog cactus. I drew the art in pencil and then painted in watercolor. I then applied India ink in areas that I felt needed to be emphasized. . . . . . . . . . . Claret Cup Cactus is a member of the Cactus Family. The plant grows to 6 inches in height and has green to bluish-green stems to 1.5 inches in diameter with 9-10 ribs and spines to 2.5 inches in length. The plant typically grows in crowded clumps. The actual name for this cactus is Echinocereus which comes from Ancient Greek (echinos), meaning "hedgehog," and the Latin cereus meaning "candle." The Claret Cup Cactus is also known as: mound cactus and king's cup cactus. The hedgehog cactus almost seems to pop up out of nowhere with their bright blooms, and remind the artist of how the crocuses do so in her home state of Oregon, during the early spring. Claret Cup Cactus blooms between May - July and produces red to red-orange cup shaped flowers with a bright green stigma in the center to 1.5 inches in width. Flowers are followed by a 1 inch fruit.
