In the midst of old buildings and narrow streets in Seville, Spain, sits the Metropol Parasol. It is a wooden structure located at La Encarnacion square, in the city's old quarter. It's a bit jarring to come upon after focusing on the traditional architecture of Seville! Dating from 2011, it is 490' X 230', with a height of 85'; it claims to be the largest wooden structure in the world. It was controversial in Seville due its appearance, but also the location, delays and cost overruns in. On the day of my visit, the upper levels were all closed so I could enjoy the street level view but not the rooftop view. The building is popularly known as Las Setas de la Encarnacion (Incarnacion's mushrooms). Since the 19th century, a market was located in the plaza, housed in a market building.
