Description
Who is she, this lady in waiting?
Set against a lavender glow of sunset against the coastal ocean in the background, a young woman wraps in a light shawl and stands under the light of a portico. Behind her, a grand Victorian house is lit from top to bottom, in expectation for the visitor who is to come, but is not yet here.
Is this an assignation? Is it a family get together? Is the woman waiting for one person, or for many?
Lady in Waiting, like many representational paintings, invites the viewer to step into the image and become part of the landscape. There is a story – one started and framed by the artist – but the story is flexible and adaptable, and is meant to be added to, changed, meditated upon, and embellished by the viewer. And because each viewer has unique experiences of life, he or she will develop a different story.
Sometimes this story changes, with the same viewer, depending upon the day, the time, the season. With each change, one goes deeper into the realm of thought – dreaming, daydreaming, remembering, wondering, feeling a sense of poignancy, reveling in the treasured sense of memories.
As the woman stands there, waiting in anticipation and expectation, we stand there with her – because we all know what it means to wait upon someone or something, never really sure if or when they will arrive, questioning with each sound whether it is the person we await.
“I’m so impatient, I can’t wait,” we often say, as if we are the only person on the planet who isn’t any good at waiting. But the fact is – none of us is particularly good at waiting, and if we do so, it’s frequently because we have no choice. And because of this experience, we give companionship and support to the person who is waiting, standing there beside her and being the best friend we can be.
(Lady in Waiting is set along the Pacific Northwest Coast.)
