Description
Clouds billowing over distant mountains promise a late afternoon storm. Breaking through the clouds, the afternoon sun casts its glow on harvested fields, and one wonder which will win: the storm, or the calm of an evening sunset?
Pine Grove, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into a world where the sky is big enough to see, and the action of the storm is overhead and majestic. Standing in the midst of country fields, the hiker closes his or her eyes as the wind of the storm sweeps by, catching one’s coat and whipping it in the breeze.
At one time, the fields and meadows of Pine Grove were a series of small, family homesteads, and in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, many people settled in the area to grow wheat and create a life for themselves of independence from the city. But things changed in the 1930s, when the Great Depression drove many out, and after that, government policies favored those with capital and the financial means to buy up huge swathes of land and create agribusinesses. Corporate policy does not favor small family businesses nor little farms.
Pine Grove is a reminder to us, however, of the dreams and hard work that drove the early settlers of the area, and it is an encouragement to us to not give up in our endeavors as individuals and families. Yes, in many ways, the corporations control and rule the economy, and the small person does not see how he or she can fight against this.
But at the same time, more and more people are desiring a return to the simplicity of earlier days, as well as seeking out food that is grown by small farmers and families of determined, hardworking people. Bit by bit, little changes are made. We, as individuals, can do much to create change by supporting the endeavors of small businesses, family farms, and individual endeavors.

My immediate thought is I am glad you chose not the clear all the pines to make way for the planting. Beautiful work, Steve!
