Description
8 long-legged green katydids are displayed on a white background with white and yellow flowers, their green and pink flower buds, and green stalks of apple cactus in this katydid cactus garden nature mandala. The katydid common to North America, Pterophylla camellifolia, is a green long-legged giant
leafhopper joining over 8000 other katydid species worldwide in the order Orthoptera meaning “straight wing” that also includes crickets and grasshoppers. Their distinctive chirping melodic sound is produced by “stridulation” created by comb-like front wing parts that glide and slide back and forth to create their resonant chirp. Some katydids are plant eaters while others prey on other insects and snakes and lizards. I have a fondness for katydids from their summer night songs I remember as a child and for my nickname for my now adult daughter who also likes ladybugs.
