Description
These paintings are done from telephoto photography my wife took from our back yard. The birds are in a shallow inlet of Carey Bay on Grand Lake O' The Cherokees in northeast Oklahoma. They were taken in the morning and the air was misty and still. For these paintings I tried to capture the misty and telephoto feeling of that morning. Great Egrets are tall, thin, graceful birds. Adults stand over three feet tall with wingspans of 65 to 85 inches. They have long, thin yellow beaks, long wavy necks and long, thin, black legs and feet. Some references call them Great White Egrets, common Egrets, or White Herons. They migrate as far north as the northern U.S. and southern Canada in summer and south to the southern U.S., Mexico and Central American coastal areas in winter. Great Egrets hunt in shallow waters and wetlands for small fish, frogs, crayfish, reptiles and insects. In breeding season they grow long white plumes and they were hunted nearly to extinction for these plumes to be used on ladies' hats, They were made a protected species and have made a comeback. Now they are common around here. A Great Egret in flight is the symbol for the National Audubon Society.
