Description
Beauty truly is in the eye of the beholder. Who would believe that anyone would think of these brilliant-colored flowers as weeds? Yet that's what they're considered in their native southern Africa, although they're also known as treasure flowers.
These lovely plants, which belong to the same family as North American blanket flowers (gaillardia), can be grown as a drought-tolerant groundcover. When I bought them, I was told they were perennials. But doing a little extra research, I now find they are considered annuals here in New England or wherever there is frost.
They open up only in bright sun and close tightly for the evening or even under a somewhat cloudy sky. I have also read that they are plentiful in some areas of Australia.
