Description
Food and bacteria in the small intestine. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of food debris (yellow) and normal intestinal bacteria (purple) on villi (projections, red) in the ileum. The ileum is the final section of the small intestine, before it becomes the large intestine. A variety of bacteria populate the human digestive system. In the small intestine they help to digest food and prevent harmful disease-causing bacteria from proliferating. Rod-shaped bacteria are called bacilli. Magnification x475 at 6x7cm size.
