Description
Foetal small intestines. Macro photograph of a section through the abdomen of a 7 month old foetus. The front of the body is at bottom. The protrusion at bottom is the umbilical cord. The front half of the abdomen at this level is taken up by the small intestines. Some of the intestines contain matter (red), while other portions (dark purple) are empty. The small intestines are where nutrients are absorbed into the blood. At top are muscles (purple) of the back, with the cauda equina (pink), a bundle of nerve roots, below them and the spine below the cauda equina. The bone of the spinal vertebra is beige and the spinal cord within it is dark pink.
