Description
The colors of the Oregon Coast sunset are fiery, blazing with intensity and emotion.
Not only is it the sky that entices our eyes with its oranges and reds, its corals and purples and lavenders, but also it is the warm light from the beach house windows, beckoning the traveler to step in if the evening air gets too chilly.
Also inviting are the campfires dotted along the beach, started and nurtured by intrepid beach walkers who coax flame from the driftwood (this is not easy to do!).
The combination of all of these elements transforms the beach, during the gloaming hour, into a place of mystical fantasy, embracing a sense of magic and possibility. While during the day the beach is a place of space and freedom and joy, a place where children build sandcastles and wise adults join with them, at night it deepens and transforms into a place of different, quiet beauty β a place of intimacy where friends literally gather around campfires and tell stories, a place where beach walkers stop and watch the horizon change in color from glowing gold to deepest, darkest black, a place where there is no need β at all β to look at oneβs phone because there is so much around us to look at.
Fire on Shore, the artwork, invites the viewer to step into this world of tranquility and mystery, to walk softly so as not to frighten the seabird stretching its neck forth to listen. In this world, on this beach, time does not so much stand still as it slows way, way down, encouraging us to do the same.
(This particular stretch of beach is located on the seven-miles of beach stretching through Lincoln City, Oregon. A companion work to Fire on Shore is Oregon Coast Afterglow, also on this site.)
