Description
Because I am seriously immune-compromised, it has taken me quite a while to get over Covid. It has been unusually cold for us in Central Florida. All of this contributed to my thinking about lazy warm summer days outside. One of my favorite places to go at such times is in the Merritt Island Wildlife Refuge where there are lots of little islands in the Indian River. During the summer and fall, it is often full of pretty colorful flowers like these.
The flowers are single, semi-double, double, and even tubular, and grow on long stems above the long, soft, hairy leaves. Difference in colors and variations in petal shapes are a result of natural hybridization. They are usually reddish purple or orange-red with yellow tips, but can also be solid yellow, orange, pink, or red.
Lots of seed heads, which have lost their petals can be seen. They are mostly light-colored spheres with red spikes.
The bulbous projections seen on the outside of the coronavirus are spike proteins (red-orange). This fringe of proteins gives the virus its crown-like appearance under the microscope, from which the Latin name corona is derived. The seed heads in this painting remind me of the coronavirus. It looks like a field of Covid to me. It seems appropriate for what is going on currently in our world.
I imagined a more surreal painting when I began, however, this is what I came up with. Can you see what I see?
This expressionistic surreal acrylic painting is on a 15” by 24” stretched Belgian linen.
