Description
Original fine art photography by John Bartelt - Copyright 2010 - 2018 All Rights Reserved, WATERMARKS WILL NOT APPEAR ON PURCHASED IMAGES.
The image of this Ferruginous Hawk was captured at Lake Pueblo State Park in southern Colorado.
I was walking my dog when I spied this hawk perched up on that broken-off branch on a cottonwood tree. He looked so small sitting there but when I later saw him flying above the tree his wingspan seemed enormous. Ferruginous Hawks are the largest of North American hawks, attaining wingspans of 54 inches.
Ferruginous Hawks live in the open spaces of the West, in grasslands, prairie, sagebrush steppe, scrubland, and pinyon-juniper woodland edges They eat a diet of small mammals, sometimes standing above prairie dog or ground squirrel burrows to wait for prey to emerge and can usually be found hunting from a lone tree, rock outcrop, or from high in the sky.

John Bartelt replied:
Thanks very much, Linda, for the kind words about my photo, your visit and support. Actually, that hawk was perched fairly high up in that Cottonwood tree. High enough to feel seemingly secure from passersby below.
