Description
Original fine art photography by John Bartelt of Colorado.
This image of cattle feeding at a supplemental hay feed station was photographed in the Wet Mountain Valley near Westcliffe, Colorado. During extreme cold, farmers will increase the amount of feed that cattle receive in order to boost their metabolism and help produce body heat. Supplemental feeding is most important, especially if heavy snow cover makes it difficult for cattle to graze. The critical temperature for cattle depends on their hair coat. From fall to midwinter, the hair coat continues to grow and the critical temperature for cattle decreases. With a heavy winter coat, the critical temperature for cattle is around 18 F. Below that temperature, the energy demands for a cow to maintain her body temperature increase.
