Description
Endoscope image of a superficial stomach (gastric) ulcer, a lesion caused by the digestion of the mucous membrane lining & underlying muscle layers by gastric acid, pepsin & bile. This image shows the typical appearance of a benign gastric ulcer; oval in shape, with an even, cratered yellow-white base. Symptoms include vomiting and upper abdominal pain after eating. Causes are related to diet, alcohol consumption, stress and certain drugs. Complications such as bleeding, perforation and obstruction due to scarring may occur. Gastric & duodenal ulcers are sometimes called peptic ulcers.
